TBWinRE Windows 10 vs. Windows 11

Can you explain a little more, what exactly is the issue when using boot.wim from different versions of Windows to make TBWinRE? My TBWinRE version based on Windows 10 seems to be able to access Windows 11 files and otherwise behave normally. I would rather not update TBWinRE to Windows 11 if it is not backwards compatible with Windows 10, since I still use that also.

It's generally recommended to have the boot media version be the same as the highest version of Windows it's being used on. For example, using TBWinRE based on Windows 11 on both Windows 11 and Windows 10 systems. However, if your Windows 10-based boot media is working properly for you on your systems it should be fine. Note that the Windows "repair" functions/utilities for an older version of Windows wouldn't normally be used or supported on a newer version of Windows (I assume what you're doing here is using the third-party programs such as IFW).

You can also create the Windows 11 TBWinRE boot media on a different USB flash drive so you still have your Windows 10 version available if needed.

Otherwise, if you mean actually using a different WIM version that doesn't match the Windows version (such as using a Windows 10 WinRE WIM as the source for a build on a Windows 11 system), this would likely generate a warning and isn't recommended. The Windows file versions and drivers are for a different version and may not work correctly or may be excluded. However, depending on how the build is used, this may not cause any critical issues. You would need to test that the required functionality works correctly.

OK. Thanks. And, as an aside, TBWinRE is much improved over the years, especially the the plugin options, the added driver folder and the mount pause, so users can double check files in the .wim file before saving it.
