TBOSDT PRO and UsbBoot to Bootable USB

Post by Chattan »

I am using TBOSDT PRO with an older version of Image For Windows (v1.64) but when it comes to copying from a newly installed 7500MB (HPFS/NTFS) partition with XP SP3 Pro MUI with the MUI now rolled back and no language support installed, to a 7650MB (HPFS/NTFS) Kingston G3 Data Traveller USB stick I get - error 61

First a large grey window pops up with all manner of info on it.

Is there a list of error codes somewhere please?

Or can you just tell me what I am doing wrong.

Should the USB be formatted to HPFS/NTFS or to FAT32?

If I copy the D: drive installation to the USB Stick and then make it bootable at first it succeeded but now it says that it is unable to establish the path, "Use Backup?" (agree) then "Backup succeeded", but I don't see the modified files on the USB which I saw before ...

Image for Windows is installed on the C: drive so I have to type the path in manually.

The UsbBoot folder is installed on C:\UsbBoot - and - D:\UsbBoot.

And I thought it would be easy!!!

After all I have been using TeraByte products for some 10 years now...

Image for Windows, Image for DOS and BootIT NT are easy to use and never make a mistake.

So I guess that it must be me making all the mistakes on this one.

I do have an Administartors account but have to give myself permissions to copy the System Volume Information folder to the USB.

Does the USB need the SVI folder

Thanks for all helpful suggestions and advice.

Are you really using a V1 version of IFW? Or do you mean 2.64?

Are you using the current versions of TBOSDT Pro and the USBBoot script?

Hello Paul,

Yes, it is IFW version 1.64 and I have IFD version 1.99 and BootIT NT all of which perform flawlessly.

Last night I stripped the XP SP3 Pro installation on drive D: (Dual boot) down to the bare bones and this morning it is being copied to the Kingston USB stick formatted to NTFS.

I had to give myself permissions to copy the System Volume Information file and the Microsoft\Crypto\ --- \Machine keys. (x2)

Are these folders really necessary on a USB?

Sorry,

"Are you using the current versions of TBOSDT Pro (IFW 2.71) and the UsbBoot script?"

Yes, both are current.

The older version of IFW makes TBI001.IMG files and the latest version makes TBI001.TBI files.

Is it that the two are not compatible?

You need version 2 of IFW to be run correctly under UsbBoot.tbs. IFW v1 and IFW v2 are not compatible.
However, you can copy your installation to the USB independently from UsbBoot (so running IFW by itself), then use UsbBoot to just enable your installation to be "USB bootable".

If they are needed on an internal drive, then they are also needed on a USB drive.

Really!

Does that mean that it will run from a TeraByte .IMG file when made bootable?

Or does IFW have a copy function which I haven't spotted?

Yes, IFW v2 has a copy function.
But, with IFW v1, you can also backup the system you want to copy to a .IMG file, then restore this file to your USB drive.

No need to be formatted. IFW will do it when copying or restoring. It will then be formatted in the same format than the source drive (or the image file).

Thanks,

I was being - very - stupid.

I did a clean re-install to the BootIT NT re-sized D: drive with XP Pro after running nLite on it to remove all the bloat and the MUI which I now have no use for. This had the benefit of not installing the old legacy Teefer for NT drivers for the PS/2 mouse and keyboard as I no longer use PS/2 and they had always caused a problem of not always loading properly.

Then, as you say, I used IFW v1.64 to image the D: drive and restored the image to the 8GB Kingston USB expanding it to fit, writing the mbr and making it active, and then ran TBOSDT UsbBoot.tbs to make it bootable.

Should be alright now as everything went smoothly.

Many thanks for your help and invaluable products which have saved this system many times.

Ian Chattan.

PS Whilst I was at it I made a Bootable USB XP Recovery Console Using a HP Utility and .cmd and .vbs script, so I am well equipped with tech tools now.

Does it boot fine?

"Does it boot fine?"

Nope! It gives me a BSOD but then the target machine is quite different.

I took all the drivers out to try to force it to put new drivers in but I rather think that I would need the Manufacturers driver disc.

Never mind. Maybe the Kingston Data Traveler G3 is not suited to this task.

After re-formatting the partition will not stay on the stick reverting to 'un-allocated'.

Just a point of clarity, as I see that the instructions do say that not all USB/UFDs are bootable.

(I have/had a little used 20 GiB USB - HARD - drive somewhere.)

Which is preferable?

A UFD flash drive, a USB stick or a USB - HARD - drive?

Thanks for your help.
