Installation help request

Post by Calafax »

For 10+ years I've used System Commander as my boot manager, but I hope to update to BootIt BM. After two hours of reading the BIBM manual and the online info, I remain confused about how to install BIBM to achieve what I want. Advice would be appreciated.

HD0:

Primary partition
C: FAT16 DOS7

Logical partition
D: FAT32 XP
E: NTFS Win7
F: FAT32 DATA
[several other
FAT32 data
partitions]

I build systems, do some programming, and have good reasons for the drive/partition layout I now have and need to preserve.

Win7 is not yet installed (but soon will be), so part of my confusion results from familiarity with Win7 that consists only of reading about its installation behavior and requirements. I also plan to install BIBM on C:, not in a separate partition, and to limit the primaries.

So do I choose the Multi-OS install? Am I executing what the manual calls a "paired partitions" installation? The manual's explanation of the Multi-OS/paired partitions distinction is poor. (Isn't a paired partitions installation a subtype within Multi-OS, not a contrast to Multi-OS as is implied by "or" in the manual's header "Create paired partitions or Multi-OS installations"? Of course, Image for Windows still equates "Cancel" with "Exit" in one button label, so TeraByte's need for a good manual editor isn't surprising.)

What else should I know before I start? My thanks for any guidance available.

You're more familiar with the "multi-os" type of installs. So you'd enable
multi-os on the primary partition because when you install the OSes to the
volumes, they will be updating that boot partition with the boot data.
Enable multi-os after you do your DOS7 Install (which you'll want to install
first), then just install to the existing volumes you create.
