Different Windows 10 update problem - on a different Dell laptop - (0x80070643)

Post by ohaya1000 »

Hi,

I have an older Dell Precision laptop that has 2 an SATA SSD as the C: drive and a hard drive. I have BIBM on that laptop with MBR.

I dual boot two Windows 10 Pros, each in a separate partition.

That is also still running Windows 10 Pro, and when I tried to do a Windows update on it today, I got a different error:

"There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643)"

When I searched for that error, some info mentioned just restarting the machine, but I've tried that and the Update still fails with the same error.

I also found some posts that mentioned that the RE partition might be too small?

Has anyone run into the above error and will just resizing the RE partition fix the problem?

(I made the mistake of starting this post on the machine with the problem so I will post more info in a bit, from a different machine).

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

It is likely that the RE is too small.

Resize Win10PROSSDrec 400 MiB smaller
Slide the RE partition to zero Free space before
Resize the RE partition to Max size. It should be around 997 MiB.

Hi Brian,

I just tried that (actually increased RE partition by 1GB), but the update is still failing (same error message).

I was thinking about this... So remember I have 2 Windows 10s on this machine (WINPROSSD and WINPROSSDrec), and I also just updated the "other" Windows 10, but there is only one Win RE partition, so if the update uses the RE partition, maybe the updates from one of the Windows 10s is messing up the update from the other one?

I think I should've maybe had 2 RE partitions, one for each Windows and set the Boot edit for each windows 10 to its own RE partition in the boot edit??

If that IS the problem, I guess the question is: How can I fix the problem, since the RE partition seems to be messed up for the "WINPROSSDrec" Windows 10?

Jim,

In the Win10 that's failing to update...
Admin command prompt. Enter...

reagentc /info

Can you send a screenshot?

In the OS with the disabled RE. Admin command prompt...

reagentc /enable

No need for a screenshot. Did it work or not?

resize filler3, slide it down, resize mbr entry 1 large (not sure where this message went).

I think the current MBR entry 1 is almost 2 GB. Already resized. Do you want it larger?

I think that if the RE partition is right after the Windows partition, that seems to work/be sufficient.

I basically:

1) copied the original RE partition, which was just below the WINPROSSDrec partition to make a 2nd RE partition just below the WINPROSSD partition.
2) I changed the 2 boot edit entries so that each boot edit entry had the corresponding RE partition

I didn't have to run reagentc /enable.

After that I booted into both windows and the WINPROSSDrec update, which was failing, now worked and the WINPROSSD update still worked.

I am attaching a JPG with the 2 reagentc commands and the list of the partitions:
