Alignment problem?

Post by sigi »

On 04/05/2012 11:43 AM I started a thread in the BIBM forum with the title “Alignment problem?“ I am quoting the two postings below. Upon Tom Pfeifer’s advice given in the second quotation I am carrying on this thread here by attaching my Partinfo. Hopefully it will reveal any errors in BING settings and configuration of partitions so that would get the urgently needed assistance in regaining control over my two rather messed-up hard drives.
I should add that I have currently installed BIBM because under its regime I am having fewer problems than under BING. But of course I am prepared to reinstall BING any time should this be required.

The funny thing is that there is 2 MB free space in front and a 6 MB free space at the end which suggests to me that they might have formed an 8 MB free space originally. I cannot imagine what might have brought about such a strange layout, which obviously causes some issues like “device inaccessible” messages during certain boot-time operations and failure to boot from that hard drive any restored OS’s.

Is there a simple way to recombine the 2 MB and 6 MB blocks of free space mentioned or should I just shift the Extended to the beginning or resize its front end in order to take up these leading 2 MB?

Also, you should clarify if you're using BING (BootIt NG) or BIBM

talking about a feature unique to BING (image partitions).

I was not allowed to attach the result of PARTINFG.EXE which was only available as PartInfg.txt. When I tried to attach it I got the message "The extension txt is not allowed." So I just made a screenshot. What should I do?

if you don't want to see it, disable 2048 sector alignment and it will be
cylinder based alignment again (typically 8MiB). You can enable the Fill
CHS option in BING to help prevent BIOS geometry auto mode from causing
issues. To get rid of it, you'll have to resize the start/end of the
extended partition.

The two changes proposed (disable 2048 sector alignment and enable CHS alternative) brought back the familiar 8 MB in front. At the end of the disk there was no longer a free space.

1) But your expectations that issues might be prevented did not come true. To begin with I installed BING 1.87 from my installation diskette (Should I have uninstalled BIBM before? I omitted that.) After removing the diskette and rebooting as instructed I got the message “Divide error. – Press ENTER to reboot.” – a situation I knew long before I had tried out BIBM.

2) After the next reboot I chose “Access BootIt NG Partition” and made the two changes mentioned.

3) When I booted Windows 7 from HD-0 I got a Black Screen from Windows Boot Manager telling me that a recent hardware or software change might have caused Windows start failure and that I should use the Windows installation disc for repair (cf. 2nd Attachment).

With the bootability of my Win7 back the problems had not yet ceased. I wanted a situation back where both booting and working in Maintenance mode would be possible for the installation diskette and the Hard Drives.

4) Through many stages of trial and error and despair I arrived at a point where I got an EMBR of 8 MB in front and an EMBRM of 6 MB at the end. I tried to solve this by uninstalling and reinstalling BING.

5) Thereafter, I had the feeling that everything went so completely wrong that I decided to uninstall BING and reinstall from a fresh BING installation diskette. This caused some of my images on HD-1 to vanish. Most of them remained vanished after Undelete. So I decided to delete the remaining images from HD-1. At some point of time during these actions I got a second Extended Partition whereby the size of both Extended amounted to some 750 MB whereas the HDD has only 610 MB. So I deleted all after the Extended. The resulting situation is shown in the 1st Attachment.

-------------------------------

As concerns work with BING the current situation is as follows:

Hard drive:
can boot but freezes in Maintenance mode

Floppy
can boot and use Maintenance mode

The Hard Disk freeze in Maintenance Mode is a problem I hope to solve with the assistance of this Group (any ideas?). When speaking of the Hard Disk I am referring to HD-0 where my so far only OS resides. I had formerly tried to boot a restored image from HD-1 without success. This may have changed in the meantime through the measures described above. I will report back on that later on or had I rather take the opportunity to transition to BIBM after having only 1 image left (on HD-0) for restore through BING?

You'd want the "Align MBR End HS" option enabled to prevent non-cylinder
aligned partitions from causing problems for some BIOSes (You may just want
to upgrade to BIBM since that is all setup for you automatically when
enabling 2048 alignment).

For BING to undelete image type partitions, hold down the left shift key
when clicking/choosing undelete (otherwise it won't undelete them). BIBM
won't undelete them regardless.

I presume it's "Partition Work" where it seems to lock at some point, for
BING, disable your SATA and PATA options in settings (they are only used for
imaging to/from CD/DVD).

Re: Alignment problem?

The Windows repair (cf. the 2nd Attachment in my previous post) put me on the track of all the mess on my two Hard Disks.

I detected in the Explorer of the repaired Win7 that the order of Volumes (D:) through (Q:) was no longer the one that I have been used to for years. When I first was confronted with that Win Boot Mgr message on a black screen the first thing I did after successful Repair was to re-establish my old familiar sequence of Volumes via the Win7 disk management console. This led to a lot of difficult situations with many Win7 Setup-CD Repairs before the real cause of all that mess now came to my mind. In the meantime I had possibly complicated the situation by installing PCLinuxOS Openbox within the Extended of HD-0 (grub MBR in the root on sde9).

I have attached the layout of Volumes as seen by Windows (after Repair) and the sequence of Volumes as I have known it for years and have tried to enforce without thinking of the consequences this may have on the boot process. The crux of the matter is that after buying my last PC with its two 610 GB SATA hard drives I decided to spend the biggest Volume (Grafik, also called “Bilder” in BING) a huge 100 GB and therefore outsource it to the other HD’s Extended. I then did not think of the change in the order of Volumes. In the former configuration when I had all the Volumes on one hard disk it did not matter so much if I changed their order in the Win7 disk management console and so it did not come to my mind that this had changed now.

I hope that with this finding and with the help of this forum (or the BIBM forum - I am not yet determined) I will finally arrive at a fully functioning boot environment.

The next thing I plan to do is to copy the outsourced Volume named Grafik or “Bilder” back in its old place between TEXT and WAVE so that it becomes the legitimate Volume (F:). I think the remainig linux distros (two of them are still empty boot items only) will not be affected by the subsequent deletion of “Bilder” as long as I put some replacement (another new volume or linux distro) there? Otherwise I would have to edit the pertinent PCLinuxOS Openbox grub file(s). I think in my poor linux newbie’s brain it should be easy to look for sde9 and replace it by sde8.

I will report back on any problems and hope for further assistance should it become necessary.

HD-1 is definitely corrupt. I associate this finding with a former Restore of an old EMBR+HD0+HD1 Backup. Some indicators for the defectiveness:
  • OS’s cannot be booted from HD-1
  • During recent partition work (I reported on that) I came up with two Extended Partitions on HD-1 yielding a total capacity of almost double the nominal HD-1 capacity.
  • After a system-enforced repair by means of the Win7 CD which brought back the Win7 bootability I was told by the Computer Management Console (Drive Management) that HD-1 had been set offline because of a conflict of signatures with another drive.
I was able to set HD-1 online again in the Computer Management Console (Drive Management) and could work with all the volumes quite regularly afterwards as long as I only booted into Win7. And I could see them all in GParted of the Knoppix live CD (cf. Attachments).

But as soon as I started to perform some of the critical operations e.g. booting from different Boot Media into PCLinuxOS or trying to access BING Maintenance Mode after a HD bootup there sooner or later popped up the Windows Boot Manager instruction to restart with the Win7 CD and the whole misery started anew.

I would like to ask two questions:
  • What could I do or try to do in order to get back a HD-1 of high integrity?
  • How can I regain complete and unrestricted operability of the maintenance mode after booting form HD? (As it is now, maintenance mode will allow exactly 1 keystroke and freeze upon the 2nd keystroke)

Use just BootIt because I can trust that it won't mess things up. Go though
the partitions and use edit file to check and find the ones to delete to
clean up any over lapping partitions (*errors exists* will go away when no
overlapping) (another trick (once not overlapping) is to use resize to see
if it can pass the file system check then cancel). Now go into view MBR,
and assign a new disk signature, just clear it or manually change it, now
for win7 boot partition, use "Bcdedit" in boot it to fix the Device and
OSDevice entry to point to that W7 boot partition. Then you should be good
to go.

Here are the results of the checks performed in accordance with your instructions:

Edit file (as far as editable)

--- HD-0 --- all files OK

--- HD-1 --- all files OK

Error Check on Resize (as far as items are resizable)

--- HD-0 ---

Win7 OK
MBR Entry1 OK
Bilder OK
Lx_Mint hint on the difference between resizing partition as against file system
PCLOSkde hint on the difference between resizing partition as against file system
swap Resize greyed out
PCLOSobx hint on the difference between resizing partition as against file system
W7-VHD-3 OK
EMBRM There appeared a warning under “Properties”:
*Warning* The file system ID should be 14. This partition contains BootIt NG.

Moreover I got the following notification: “BootIt NG is using this
partition. Therefore, you must boot from the diskette to perform this
action.” But this was exactly what I had already done. I repeated it:
Reboot with diskette > Access BING partition > Work with partitions >
Resize EMBRM with the same result

--- HD-1 ---

all Volumes OK
w7preLx Resize greyed out (this is a 218/DAh Image of my Win7 boot partition)

BCD Edit for my Win7 boot partition

Error Message “No BCD Store”

I have attached my current partinfg.txt and BING Settings.

Re: Alignment problem?

It looks like you've got it all worked out now?

(also why BING would say the same thing is because "access bootit ng partition" makes the partition the active file system it's running from, instead you'd just go to maintenance (or press escape)).

Thank you for the hint. Entering Maintenance Mode by pressing ESC made the EMBRM resizable. By the way: without error msg.

Unfortunately not. The following problems still persist although Win7 successfully passes 3 tests (the BING WwP actions “Edit” and “Resize” do not produce any error msg, neither does Win7 Disc Repair after 2 runs in accordance with the Knowledge Base article “BOOTMGR is missing”):

  1. Entering Maintenance Mode after HD boot leads to freezing after 2 or 3 keystrokes and requires the Reset Button to be pressed
  2. BCD Edit applied to my Win7 boot partition still ends up in the “No BCD Store” error msg.
  3. Booting PCLOSobx (root and MBR on sde9) finally leads to Win7 Disc Repair being required after the following intermediate steps:

There is no GUI boot as it was immediately after installation of PCLOSobx but it boots into the grub prompt where I am told after inputting “root (hd0,8)” that the “partition table is invalid or corrupt”.

After the following actions from BING diskette:
    Reboot
    Reactivate BootIt NG
    Reboot again as prompted
    Access BootIt NG
I checked that the Boot Items and the MBR for both HD-0 and HD-1 where still as they should be. But even so Win7 did not boot normally by means of the BING diskette but ended up in the well-known black Win7 Boot Manager message requiring a Win7 Disc repair.
  4. After having run Win7 Disc Repair two times in accordance with the Knowledge Base article “BOOTMGR is missing” no remaining errors were reported in the concluding 8 tests of the startup repair.

So I was quite confident, booted from HD, entered WwP and got stuck on a “divide error”.

Couldn’t you please cast an eye on my partinfo attached to my last post? It tells you so much more than me and I am confident that you will easily detect the persistent error(s). I am lost without your help and would hate to format my hard drive(s).
