How to use BootIt with Dual Boot Windows 10??

Post by NY2KW »

I have one desktop with two HDD. I had one HDD running Win10 (UEFI and GUID) and then added a 2nd HDD. I wanted to install a second Win10 OS on the new drive to keep my stuff on the first and my wife's on the new second hdd. Installing Win10 on the second HDD created a Wins 10 dual boot. I installed Boot IT BM onto a USB and booted with that and installed BootIt with all the default options. Now when the PC powers up, I get the BootIt Menu but only one instance of "Windows 10". When that boots - I am back to seeing the Windows 10 dual boot menu.

What is the best method to clean this up so only Boot It is manipulating the boot process?

My PC uses UEFI and GUID (GPT)
Some Disk Info:

Win10 #1 is installed on Disk 1 - it is Basic 1 Tb and has 3 partitions : 2 hidden, a Recovery partition, a EFI System partition and C drive Primary partition (Boot,Page file, Crash Dump)

Win10 #1 is installed on Disk 0 - it is a Basic volume, 4Tb, the C drive is on a Basic 2Gb Primary partition and there is another 2 Gb UNallocated

I also have 2 addition 4Tb HDDs for data drives. Each is single Partition on each hdd.

Any advice how to straighten this out would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks I will read it in its entirety but the first few lines state: "Note: This article does not cover separating multiple versions of Windows installed on a UEFI/GPT system." As my post stated mine is a UEFI/GPT system, so I wanted some direction so not to make things even worse.

Jerry,

I don't know how to clean it up, but did you actually install BootIt BM as your initial post said?

BootIt BM isn't compatible with UEFI and GUID (GPT). You need BootIt UEFI.

I'm surprised that BootIt BM even booted on your system, but let's clear up what you've actually got first.

Presume you installed BootIt UEFI and not BootIt BM. If BIBM (would
have gone to some non GPT drive), uninstall it and install the UEFI version.

Then run fixboot.tbs script and create a new entry for it.

Use bcdedit on the original and remove the duplicate.

Thanks, it seems I was lucky... the USB created has one folded called "efi" so I assume it installed BootIt UEFI. I will check and follow directions and get back to you (hopefully soon)

I checked and the BootIt USB drive made was UEFI. I booted from it and ran 'fixboot.tbs' and used all the default options to install it. I removed it and rebooted and no change, I still got the Windows dual boot screen. I booted the original (old) Win10 hdd and then opened an Admin Powershell to run BCDEdit which gave me:

PS C:\> bcdedit

Any further advice appreciated. BTW, I am OK if I have to delete the new 2nd HDD Win 10 install and start from the beginning. So if the process is easier, please advise.... I assume that just deleting the 2nd HDD partition would not clean up the boot record problem??

Go to scripting, presuming you only have a \efi\microsoft.001 directory:

cd \efi
md microsoft.002
copy microsoft.001 microsoft.002 /s
exit

then go to partition work, highlight efi system partition, bcd edit,
for each directory delete the boot entry not not needed (so for .001 you
probably delete the second, and for the .002 you delete the first).

then exit partition work, click boot edit, add a new boot item that
boots from the efi system partition, using the file
\efi\microsoft.002\boot\bootmgfw.efi, also tick the box to "Rename
Directory"

Thank you for your patience. Before I do your suggestion. Please advise if I need to increase/resize EFI Partition size first. When I installed BootIt UEFI from USB, the first time reboots I see the blue background screen with a single choice for Windows 10. I select that and get a Black background screen with a Green box asking "Select Windows Installation" and the only option is "HD3:Basic Data Partition NTFS". I selected that and get a message box "Confirm Selected Windows Installation" and then I get a message "BCD store not found on HD3" Only option given is to "Select Boot Configuration in partition EFI". I then select that and get a messgage "Too few remaining space 25 MiB". I exit to a regular boot and then I am back at the Windows Dual Boot screen choices.

So my question is before I follow your advice about scripting... do I need to resize my partitions on the HD3 to make EFI partition larger?

So, under fixboot, you didn't erase and recreate the existing boot configuration, which you can do to have only one item in the BCD.
You can also use the "BCD édit" function in BIU and manage the items in the BCD menu from there. What you want is have only one there.
