Speed of creating an image?

Post by Vault Dweller »

As in topic. I'm curious what speed do you get when you create an image in BIBM?

Vault,

That's a dubious question with a vast array of differing answers.

Elements that will affect each of our PC's are;

Type of CPU, GPU, RAM (speed/ammount), HDD's (SCSI/RAID/SATA/PATA/SSD),
as well as the program itself. Your own PC's system features (or lack
thereof) will be more the determining factor than BIBM.

Maybe if you list your system's features someone here can point you
toward ways to speed it up.

And a vast array of measuring methodologies.

One huge factor is how big is the partition you want to image?

What are you imaging to? Internal HD, USB HD, SD card, CF
card, DVD, CD, other?????

Do a test on your own system and find out how much time it
takes for you. You can do that before purchasing.

The whole package of BIBM and the 3 Image products is most
reasonably priced and well worth it.

There may be a difference when using Image For Windows,
Image For Dos or Image For Linux as well.

The most important factor using Image for DOS when you use the BIOS option
is the speed for IO that your BIOS uses. Some use PIO instead of UMDA.
Huge difference, you can try using BIOS (direct) to directly access (which
would use UDMA), but it simply falls back to BIOS if it can't (you can only
tell by seeing if the title of the partition list has the bus and not a
generic name).

Ok, my PC does 5294 MB image in 4:14 min - so 20,8 MB/sec (all options on default). In direct mode it is much, much slower. I have vague impression that with BING or previous versions of BIBM I had better results. Can't be sure about it so I'm just curious if that's ok – in comparison to other users.
As for my system specs: I've got Pentium D 3.4, 2 GB of 533 DDR2, SATA Samsung F3 running at 1.5

I would also image to media separate from my computer as well.

When I got a new laptop it was very handy and fast to use
IFW to image to the D: partition initially.

My laptop is a brand new Acer I-5, Win 7 x64, 500 GB hard
drive, using 25 GB on C:, and it takes about 22 minutes to
image and do byte-for-byte validation to the D: partition.

It takes close to 30 minutes to image to SD 16 GB card. That
also depends on the card reader itself.

Yes, I keep my images on separate media as well. I use external HDD for that that.

So - asuming that byte-for-byte validation takes the same time as imaging itself - you get double speed I do. Hmm..But I guess your CPU beats mine Pentium D in every aspect :-).

Hope to see other users benchmarks as well (and maybe TB 'official' results)
