FAT 32 to NTFS conversion failed

Post by sigi »

My intention was to convert the 19,51 GB FAT 32 Volume "MISC" (H:) (cf. Attachments 1 and 2) to NTFS.

I first opened BIBM Work with Partitions and started the Align function in order to prepare the conversion.

I tried the command line "h: /fs:ntfs" without and with the parameters /x and /v in Win7, in Win7 Safe Mode and in TBWinRE. All of them resulted in an error message containing the following reason (translated from German): "Error converting the directory DIRPRI~1. The directory is either damaged or there is not enough memory space." (cf. Attachment 3).

Therefore I tried chkdsk /f. It did not find any errors. The conversion thereafter again failed.

So I decided to increase the available space. Since Volume H: has 53 % Free Space I resized my Win7 from 90 to 100 GB resulting in 28 % Free Space here. The conversion again failed with the same error message.

The verbose mode showed the statistics after about 15 minutes, thereafter it tried to convert for about 5 minutes. The result was again the above error message referring to the same directory. Could this be a question of permission settings?

At this stage I decided to try the conversion of another Volume "PC (P:)". Its size is only 7,38 GB with 22 % Free Space according to Win7 Disk Management. Whereas the BIBM Align function unexpectedly completed immediately for H: (without error message!?) it took about 5 minutes for P:. The command line "h: /fs:ntfs /x" completed successfully.

What can I do now to also successfully complete the conversion of Volume (H:)?

The convert command is part of windows. "convert x: /fs:ntfs /x" where x:
is the drive letter to convert. The /x dismounts the volume so it can
convert. If you have a problem use "chkdsk x: /f" to check the volume then
try again. If a problem, it's probably as their utility said, maybe out of
memory or out of space. You could also always just create another
partition and copy everything over from one to the other.

As far as the align option in Partition Work, if it's already aligned, it
will happen fast, if it has to move things around it will take a bit longer.

As I wrote in my first posting that is exactly what I did. Unfortunately I mistyped the command in the posting by omitting "convert". However, when trying to convert I had typed the command correctly.

Here again that was exactly what I did as I wrote in my posting. I also mentioned that it could not possibly have run out of memory since volume H: has 52 % free storage capacity as you can see in Att.2.

I will try this and report back. Thank you for the tip.

I tried your tip to copy the Volume to be converted.

As can be seen in Att. 2 of my first posting there is a Free Space of 19094 MiB after I_DWNLD. So I resized MISC from 20001 MiB to 18000 MiB. The resized volume was assigned the letter R: in Windows Disk Management and had still 47 % storage space left in it. I copied it to the 19094 MiB Free Space and applied the command line "convert r: /fs:ntfs" to it in Safe Mode as administrator. The result was exactly the same errror message as shown in Att. 3.

What can I do now?

Create the target partition as NTFS and copy to it, no need to convert it.

If you still have problems, you'd need to contact Microsoft since convert
and chkdsk are part of Windows.

chkdsk will also tell you the file system in use.

At first I had thought you referred by this recommendation to the Create and Copy functions of BIBM. But when I realized that BIBM cannot copy to a partition but only to Free Space I understood that you advised me to create a new NTFS partition in BIBM and copy to it within Win7 Explorer the contents of the Backup Volume R: created before.

I did this in the meantime and have now my former FAT 32 Volume Q: as NTFS Volume Q:. I deleted the Backup Volume R: and everything is now as I wanted.

Thank you for your help.
