New Dell Inspiron 7773 Laptop

Post by jack450 »

I have been using IFL (version 2X) for several years on computers running Windows Vista and Windows 7. A year ago I posted a message indicating that I was about to buy a new Dell XPS Laptop and wanted some advice about using IFL on the new system running Windows 10 with a 1 TB SSD Drive. Brian K., as usual, was very helpful and knowledgeable, but as it turned out, I decided to wait til a later date for a purchase upgrade.

The upgrade finally happened last week. I decided the XPS was more computer than I needed so I opted for a 17" Dell Inspiron series 7000 model 7773 running Windows 10 Pro and a SATA III 512 SSD hard drive. I just purchased the TeraByte Bundle that Includes Version 3 of IFL. Just made a boot disk of IFL 3.22.

The question is essentially the same as last year -- Can I create images using IFL 3.22 on this new computer as I have done for years on my older computers, or is there something I need to know about this newer technology before I proceed. I have never used any of the other TeraByte programs and tools, which seem to become more numerous each time I get on the site. I'm totally familiar with IFL but if anyone starts mentioning the other Terabyte programs and tools please understand that I'm unfamiliar with them, even though I've always had many of them, and respond accordingly.

Thanks,
Jack Greenberg

Jack,

The quick answer is yes. Use IFL as you have in the past. The only difference will be as you have a UEFI system you will need to image more partitions than just the OS partition. If you aren't familiar with these partitions can you post a screenshot of the Disk Management rectangle so we can offer advice?

I have 11 OSs here and I used to back them all up separately! What an
idiot I was. Some may think I still am, but I digress.

I now backup the whole OS drive every day. I may rarely backup an
individual OS, but these days it is the exception rather than the
rule.

I believe it is a UEFI system. Will a full drive image get all the partitions?

You might want to omit imaging the Dell recovery partition (10 to 20 GB) as you are creating your own images. I usually delete that partition and use the space for something else.

Thanks guys --

Brian -- I think I should just image the entire drive for now. When I learn a little more about Windows 10 and UEFI I might be able to make better informed decisions. One other question -- does Bitlocker have any effect on an image? I noticed that Bitlocker in the Control Panel is set to "ON" and it says that the OS is encrypted.

Jack,

I recall the kid's Dells having BitLocker "ON". But it wasn't really "ON", weird. I didn't want it so I disabled it.

I can't see why I need it either. Can I simply turn it off without affecting any of the data on the drive? The link you sent suggests that problems are possible if the drive is encrypted (if I understood it correctly).

Yes, your data will be OK after you turn it off.
