I think I have tried all the methods of preparing the USB stick.

This is an older computer (Athlon II). No UEFI.

1. If I start the machine with just the SSD, the machine boots to the recovery environment, but says:

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
The operating system couldn't be loaded because the system registry file is missing or contains errors
File: \windows\system32\config\system
Error code 0xc0000225
You'll need to use recovery tools...

2. If I start with the Windows installation USB stick connected, when I try "Startup Repair" it says:

Startup repair couldn't repair your PC

At least, this is the current situation after trying various command line "fixes" that I found on the internet.

Speaking of command line, one problem I am having is the bootrec /fixboot is giving me "Access is denied".

I don't have an image.

I think I'm just going to reinstall. The install I have is quite new, so it's no big deal.

Yes, my original problem was that my installed Windows 10 will not boot (actually, it boots to the recovery environment, but not to Windows itself). But this problem has nothing to do with BIBM.

Perhaps BIBM is not the best diagnostic tool, but I should be able to boot to it. That is what I am asking about here.

I think I am just going to reinstall Windows. No big deal.

Dave,

That's likely to be a BCD error. Can you boot IFL and do a BCD Edit from PartWork?

Yes, That's what I thought. I tried all the "Microsoft" BCD fixes I could find, which did change the symptoms slightly (to those above), but no dice.

Yesterday I threw in the towel and reinstalled. Gave me a chance to use Chocolatey, which I only learned about recently. It allows you to set a machine up really quickly -- highly recommended.

So my original problem is fixed, but I still can't boot to a BIBM USB stick.

Can you use the same USB stick to boot anything?

If the USB stick has been formatted UEFI it won't boot under legacy
BIOS and vice-versa.

I can boot Windows 10 installation on an identical disk (Kingston 8GB). I have also tried BIBM with a different stick (actually an SD card in an adapter) without success.

Where is the option to format UEFI in Makedisk? Both the computer I use to prepare the USB and the one I want to use it on are older non-UEFI computers.

I did not know how you were making the USB drives. I use Rufus to make
and format all my flash drives and usually only create ISOs.

Makedisk is only MBR AFAIK.

Good luck in sorting out your problem. Sorry I could not be of more
help.

That's not completely true. The latest MAKEDISK downloaded as part of the latest BootIt Collection can make boot media for either BIBM or BIU.
