Slow screen redraws *SOLVED*

Post by mashedmitten »

I've got one system that has slow redraws when doing anything in the program. It acts as though it's not recognizing the onboard video driver. By this, I mean it behaves like a system before the actual graphics driver is installed and is using the BIOS default. I could have sworn it behaved differently once, but I re-installed everything from scratch and this is the result. To be clear, it behaved wrong at first, then right and then it's back to wrong.

I'm thinking it might be due to installing it right after a new build, before the MB drivers were installed and it's using the stock BIOS driver. I think the one time it worked I re-installed BIBM and it grabbed the right driver. Thing is, the option to uninstall BIBM is greyed out. Yes, I am trying to do it from the CD and not the BIBM partition.

Before I reinstall from the ground up, I just want to make sure this is indeed what's happening. Does BIBM use the driver present when installed and not update after driver install.

The slow re-draws are killing me.

*SOLVED* makedisk is where you change video options. I made a new disk and selected Chipset and highest res/colors and everything's good.

BIBM doesn't use a driver so not sure what you're referring to?

Ok, so much for that theory. I'll look to BIOS for a setting. For some reason the video driver doesn't appear to be loading until BIBM hands things over to the OS. Again, just like the mouse issue, BIBM behaves differently than any other software I boot from. In this case everything else I've booted from has no graphics issues but BIBM just won't play nice. I got to the bottom of the mouse issue, I'll get to the bottom of this.

Did the BIOS version or video card (or firmware) change between when it worked/didn't work?

No, as close as I can recall this is what happened. I didn't notice the difference until after the fact, when it returned to not working.

On a brand new system, I installed BIBM right off the bat and created the two OS partitions I wanted to start with. I installed W7 and then W10 on the second partition. Through this, the GUI was slow. By slow, I mean screen redraws start from the top and slowly work downwards. When I re-activated BIBM after the W10 install, all of a sudden the redraws were instantaneous just like every other system. I then realized that I hadn't used the 1MB Boundaries for the SSD and that the drive was misaligned so I wiped the drive and started over. It's been slow ever since.

I'm going to check BIOS/UEFI (I'm running in Legacy Mode) to see if I didn't change something causing the issue. I don't recall doing such, but it's possible.

It's onboard video, BTW. No card.

you basically have a choice of VESA or direct video. If it doesn't support
the direct video it reverts to VESA. So you may want to check that method
and the mode being used (a different mode (colors and resolution) may work
different).

Re: Painfullly slow - everything

I have a similar experience, but probably not related. One of my systems works extremely slow when booting BIBM off of a USB stick drive. Updates take 10 minutes of more to install. Painfully slow to watch it, and wonder if it is going to complete! BIBM booted off a hard drive works like normal. Just that one system, all others work quickly. It should also be noted that booting off a sata connected CD rom I'm install disk is just as painfully slow.

I guess that it is just an old, tired system !!

Paradoxically, if you set the screw for higher numbers of colours, the
screen redraw is much faster.

I have no other options in Display Settings on the Mode group, it's locked at 240?x480?x16. Could this be something I limited in MakeDisk, or should I be looking for a system setting?

Looks like that is the problem. Never seen those figures before, but
you set this during the makedisk routine. I set mine for 1024x768 256
colours (numbers may be wrong as working from memory). I also use
VESA.
