new HDD : restoring > help!

Post by paul_6 »

Hi from Belgium,

My HDD (w10, 750Gig, no GPT) is dying.
Four partitions:
1 Fat16 (with bootitBM) : 188 megas
2 W10 : 120 gig
3 Recovery (created -without any warning- by W10 during a W10 update...!): 500 meg
4 Data only
The new HDD : 1 T
I have an image done par IFW with the three first partitions. The data ot the fourth partition have been saved (copied) on a external device.
My (main) concern is the disk signature (old disk and new disk).
Question : during the restore, do I select the Restore First Track option ??
>>If I do : the disk signature of the old disk will be transferred to the new one ? right?? is it ok?? (for me no problem!!)
>>If i do not select Restore First Track, I keep the new disk signature but I do not restore the main partition table, which is -I think- a problem!!

?? Does Image for Dos give the option "Restore First Track" ?? I did not see that.
!! By the way: copying from the old disk to the new disk is not an option: the old disk is dead
Help please!
Thanks

Paul,

Restore your images and choose Restore First Track. BIBM will be functional after the restore as you have restored the EMBR. There is no problem with the Disk Signature as you don't have the old HD in the computer along with the new HD.

"Restore First Track – Whenever you back up any partition, Image for DOS also backs up the first track of the source hard drive. If you select this option, Image for DOS will restore the first track, which includes the master boot code and the disk signature, enabling you to restore the MBR/EMBR."

Hi,
W10 and IFW were present on a second HDD. Restore took 12 minutes> Great job! (I had prepared at least 4 different boot flash keys [IFD, IFL, BIBM, WINRE+ IFW, ] just in case.. LOL)
Small problem with Asrock Bios that automatically had chosen second HDD as "the" boot HDD. Changing the settings has been a bit tricky to do.
Thks.
