Bootitbm will not allow restore to volume

Post by wizzleme »

Bootitbm will not allow restore to volume, seemed to have lost all my data and programs

Single Drive Win7: reserve partition, c:Win7boot d:data and pgms- now gone

Wanted to create extended partition with two volumes from 375GB D: partition containing data and programs.

Following bob's advice, I:

Resized D: from 374GB down to 100GB (used data of 64gb, rest free)

Imaged backup of resized partition D:data+pgms

Deleted D:

Created extended partition with two 150gb volumes, NTFS and FAT32 and 74GB free space at the end.

Restore will not show the volumes and therefore will not allow restore of Bootitbm image backup stored on C: drive. Only shows partition 3 which I guess is the old D partition of 100gb

Only shows the new extended partition and not the volumes, both empty 150GB each.

States "restore will overlap other partitions"

So I guess all my data and hard work installing programs on D: is gone??! Why can I not restore to a volume and how do I get my D:data+pgms back??

I feel a little like Rosanna Ana on SNL. Never mind, haha.

Really the menu screens for IFD are very confusing with not enough explanation within the program.

I try to be extra careful with imaging programs as better to be overly cautious than to make a difficult to correct mistake.

Got the NTFS volume restored with the old D:data partition image backup, and now have pretty much what I wanted, two volumes of 150GB each. I will use the Fat32 volume to store the backup images since it is the only partition readable from most any OS

I still have not had time to figure out the easiest way to restore windows if the registry is corrupted.
Repair under windows doesn't work mostly (no suprise there). I am sure there is an easy way to restore it without having to restore the entire partition with IFD. Can I use the original install bootitbm usb for that, since it boots?

I can't say with 10% certainty that BIBM has no facility to restore a corrupted registry, but I've never heard of it and doubt it.

If I thought my windows system was corrupted, I'd restore it completely from my latest backup. I have very up to date backups all the time. Certainly more convenient to do that if using Image for Windows.

I'd use System Restore (SR) as my first port of call. It is MUCH
faster to try than restoring a backup. SR takes about 3-4 minutes vs a
restore which can be a couple of hours. So nothing to lose if SR does
not work. I take nightly backups and so try to do risky stuff on first
booting where possible to save the time of backing up if I get risky
after a few hours work.

I have not found System Restore to be very effective myself.
In the past, I usually need to do a restore to get back in business.
Recently I was on Amazon.com looking @ reviews. When I tried to leave
the site, the browser would not shut down. I tried to shut down. It VERY
slowly closed out and on reboot, The same message I get when I update
Windows appeared AND too a LONG time to finish.

I decided not to take a chance. I did reboot and made a Mozbackup of
Thunderbird, then did a restore of an image about a month old. Then did
a manual delete of the Tunderbird files already there. A reinstall of TB
and the run it briefly. Shut TB down and restore the Mozbackup file.
Very little lost. Updated a few other important files that needed that.

On my other laptop, a massive and unexpected repair made Windows say my
copy was not valid. A restore of an earlier image took care of that as
well.

Thank you Terabyte. Very useful to know. I think this info escapes general attention and is worth being brought to light here.

Mary, have you ever considered putting your whole TB Profiles directory into a NTFS partition of its own? Once you did that you'd never again have to deal with Mozbackup. The mails are always there. Of course you would need backups of this partition in accordance with your requirements. I for my part have never had to restore such a backup since the creation of that partition in October 2012.

I sometimes move the file from one laptop to another. It only takes
about 10 minutes to do so no big deal.

I do create a backup nightly away from the program.
