copy image to new computer

Post by Walter B »

My motherboard has seen its last days. I'm going to replace the MB,
Processor, and Memory.
The new box will be UEFI; the old box is not.
How do I restore an image made from the old (MBR) box to the new (UEFI)
box? I want to convert the MBR drives to UEFI. Partition Magic 11.5 has
that capability.
Do I make the drive conversions first, using the PM DVD, then make the
image using the IFD DVD?
I know the system won't boot after the conversion, so I'm trying to
figure a way to do it so that the new computer will boot.

You can use the TBOSDT "Change Disk Type" script (chgdtype.tbs) to convert from MBR to GPT and make it bootable (the script requires TBOSDT for BootIt). Of course, you should also be able to leave it as MBR on the new system -- assuming it's not locked to UEFI.

Thanks. I have the TBOSDS Pro installed. Do I need to download the
TBOSDT for BootIt?

You would need TBOSDT for BootIt. Note that the version that comes with V3 just needs the BIBM key to activate the BootIt features.

So I will need to buy BIMB?

To use the chgdtype.tbs script you would need to have a BIBM key. So, yes, if you don't have it. Partitioning changes are needed that aren't supported in the regular Pro version.

How did this all turn out for you?

I'm curious, because I just went kind of the "other way", i.e., I just got a refurb Dell M7510 (with an SSD + HD) that had UEFI enabled, and ended up disabling all the UEFI stuff to go to regular MBR/EMBR so that I could use BIBM.

I have the impression that if I left the BIOS at UEFI that BIBM wouldn't be able to do much of the things I needed/wanted (which was to do everything I could before with BING)?

Hi,

Thanks. I'm still curious though. Are you using with BIBM? And if so, is your BIOS still set to UEFI when using BIBM?

Thanks,
Jim
