A Bit Strange

Post by AlanD »

I backup full drive every day, and use the /purge:-2 switch.
Strange part is, it saves images for two days about 2-3 days a week. On
other days, 3 backups are saved. I have never tried to investigate
further as to exactly when this happens.

It has always done this, ever since the 'purge' switch was added to IFW.

Any comments?

Alan,

Does the backup run at exactly the same time every day?

Think of purge:-2 as giving your images a life of 48 hours or 2880 minutes.

that would be the only difference, but AFAIK they all occur between 6
and 11 pm

I say this because my backups are manually instigated

Maybe I am thinking backwards but wouldn't that parameter mean that I
would sometimes have only one backup, as opposed to three?

I have no familiarity with this option, but am just trying to apply logic to your last question.

You say all backups are done between 6 and 11 PM.

Let's say hypothetically that you do them consistently at 10 PM for a week. As I understand it that should get you in a routine where oldest of two is purged and the newly created backup joins the one not purged to maintain two.

Now suppose you do a backup at 7 PM. The way it looks to me the oldest existing backup created at 10 PM two days ago would not be 48 hours old and would not be purged.
