Hi Alan,

Yes, I've seen the Plugable devices (on Amazon and their website). They, and "Uspeed" seem to be pretty good with USB 3.0. Unfortunately, I started "dipping my toes" into USB 3.0 before I knew about them, so I already have a couple of enclosures, drives, cables, and a hub. The hub that I have is not great, and I'm getting to the point that I'm thinking it's not worth trying to get it to work stably, so I'm close to deciding to get one of the Plugable hubs (probably the 7-port one). Unfortunately, for my laptop, I don't have the option of using an expansion card though :(...

maybe the cable?

Hi,

Man, I'm really starting to wonder if USB 3.0 is just "not ready for
prime-time". I just got another USB 3.0 drive in, and even when directly
connected into the USB 3.0 port, it keeps dropping out. Plugging it into
USB 2.0 port is fine.

So, so far, I've had problems with a USB 3.0 hub, and a USB 3.0 drive.

I'm starting to wonder if the USB 3.0 port on this Toshiba laptop is bad, or
maybe the drivers. I just installed the latest Intel drivers a couple of
days ago (just released, 1.0.7, I think).

Sigh...

Jim

Hi,

I don't think so. First of all, I've got a couple of different cable now, with different lengths, and all eventually encounter the problem.

Also, it doesn't seem to matter if I connect the drive directly to the USB 3.0 port or go through the hub (it's a little worse with the hub though).

For example, I got a bunch of Jpegs on a USB 3.0 hard drive from a relative today, about 5 GB total. I had to copy those about 6 times, eventually plugging the drive directly into the port AND copying the files in smaller sets of files, and even using Teracopy, before I was able to get them all copied over to the laptop's internal hard drive. i figure that I'd have been better off just plugging into the USB 2.0 port instead, and probably gotten it done a little faster.

I think that you have a USB interface card in your case. That might be the difference.

I'm hoping that if I even eventually get around to getting one of the Plugable hubs, that might make a difference, as they also have like 4 amp adapters.

Thanks,
Jim

Notes regards Plugable: When I first bought the dock and expansion card
from them, I received excellent tech support, with several questions
that arose. I had a mechanical issue with the dock design, which was
relayed to them, along with my recommendations for permanent fix.

Whether it was ever considered as an important design issue (to them), I
have no way of knowing. Problem is that the space around the hard
drive, when plugged in, is enough to allow a fair bit of fore and aft
movement of the drive, which puts undesireable stress on the drive
connectors. After all, a 3-1/2" HD has fair amount of mass-most of it
concentrated at the end protruding from the "toaster" slot.

I "fixed" mine by gluing two 3/4"D x 1/4" THK wool pads
to the inside of the dock slot front corners at the top edge (top of the
toaster slot). Drive is now very stable with almost zero fore and aft
movement possible, and "fix" has insignificant affect on heat removal.
