Yes indeedee.

No. The upgrade wizard in run in a qualifying OS. I ran min under Win
7 on the target PC (I cannot tell if the upgrade is locked to a given
OS or can be used after an upgrade or not [OEM vs Retail licence]).
One downloads the OS and one gets the option to create an ISO, use it
to burn a disk and install clean. Easy.

Well, having played around a bit with it and got it to (almost) bend
to my will; I'm unimpressed. There is NOTHING in Win 8 that makes it a
necessary or desirable upgrade.

Many things that could be changed in Win 7, Vista etc just cannot be
now. Yes, those are the first things I like to configure on a new
Windows install.

If I got Win 8 on a new PC, I'd install Win 7 as my main OS.

Makes me wonder what they were doing all the time.

Oh, and I noticed a minor bug that has surfaced that is common on
Vista. When one empties the recycle bin, the window does not show the
emptied state...it still shows the contents and must be manually
refreshed.

DrT,

I'm still trying to understand the upgrade process. You downloaded the software and made an ISO and then a DVD. What I haven't grasped is how you installed Win8. Did you install it to the same HD that contained your qualifying Windows partition or did you install it to a new blank HD that you partitioned prior to the Win8 install? If it was the first choice, did you install into a new partition or into the old OS partition? I'm interested because I'm going to have to do this shortly.

I recently ordered a new Windows 7 Home Premium Family pack
to make sure if I get another computer it WON'T have Win 8.

Not sure if you can get that version in the UK or not.

Mary,

I've spent a lot of time using the Win8 betas and I like it and prefer it to Win7. Only human to have different preferences.

I installed to a fresh/empty/virgin partition on the same HD that had
the qualifying OS on - all other partitions were removed from the MBR
and not just hidden. The qualifying stage is done by the wizard and
not during the install. I am not sure if the downloadable upgrade is
tied to the qualifying PC in any way *before* install. That is why I
only d/l it for my laptop. I tend to upgrade my desktop every 2-3
years in some way or another and don't want to find that the upgrade
has an OEM-type of licence instead of a retail-type. MSoft have not
been able to give me an answer to this.

Please let me know if I am still not making any sense .

Don't think it is. The *only* advantages that I have found with Win 8
is that LibreOffice loads much faster than it does in Win 7, and Java
(32 & 64 bit) installs much faster. That is it. TBH, I prefer Vista to
Win 8 - the 64 bit version in nowhere near as much a dog as the 32 bit
version was.

Thanks,

There are numerous threads about the upgrade and some conflicting posts. I gather the install always works but whether Win8 activates is another matter. This article suggests just about anything works.

FWIW, activation worked here.

DrT,

Could the Win8 DVD "see" your qualifying OS partition? Was that partition in the MBR at the time?
