Here are some interesting developments with Windows 8, in case you
haven't seen them:

I downloaded copies of the Developers Win 8. I installed the
32 bit over my current copy of Win 7 and that worked well.
It does leave 10+ GB of old windows behind that can be
removed in Disk Cleanup. I wound up with only 14 GB after
that cleanup was successful.

It has IE 10 on it. When I tried to download from 2
different banks several times, it failed on both of them. I
had to use Firefox to get valid files. Not a good start in
my book.

Also attempted to do a clean install of the 64 bit and it
was hanging saying it could not communicate with a USB
device. The only USB device I had attached is my mouse!!!
Gave up on that rather quickly.

I found the huge icons to be rather a pain. I have trouble
even imagining using a touch screen on laptops. My vision
has finger prints all over it. It just doesn't seem healthy
for any LCD screen either. My shoulders also groaned about
the prospect of continually having my hands in the air in
order to use a touch screen.

I hope they are smart enough to enable turning that
"feature" off completely. Then we will at least have a
choice in how to access our data.

You are supposed to be able to shut it down by Start on the
desktop. Most of the time that did not work and took 3 steps
to get it down.

Playing with Win 8 was a bit of fun anyway. Have now
restored my image of Win 7 with a sigh of relief.

Re 64 bit Win 8:

Even though my touchpad is totally nonfunctional, I even
removed my USB mouse and the attachment to the computer. So
the only USB devices now there were what is on the basic
computer itself.

The 64 bit Win 8 was STILL hanging on clean install saying
it could not communicate with USB. Does that mean they don't
include USB 2.0 drivers at all on the ISO file? It could and
that makes sense.

If that is the case, they had better fix that since almost
all laptops currently have ONLY USB 2.0 ports.

Did not attempt to do a clean install of Win 8 32 bit after
that experience with 64 bit so don't know if it would work.

Mary,

You can get rid of the Metro desktop and use a Start menu with this batch file, run as administrator...

ren shsxs.dll shsxsOLD.dll

It is pre-beta.

When Win 8 64 bit won't even install due to USB problems,
that is NOT a good start.

WIndows 8 beta is scheduled to be released at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 29 Feb. What we have at present is an early "alpha" preview build.

Maybe the beta will actually install on my laptop. The
Developers 64 bit would not and had a USB error.

I removed ALL USB devices including the mouse. Still got the
same error and a halted install.

Come on, cannot even install because of a USB issue????

Only a minor change in a program, let alone an OS, can have unforeseen
consequences.

That USB issue does not seem to be a common problem.
