How does SATA booting work?

Hi,

I have three hard disks in my current PC. I am getting my new one
tomorrow and the plan is to just install them in the new one and boot
it.

How does a computer "know" which drive to use for booting on a SATA
system when there is a mixture of OS and data drives?

You would set the booting order of the drives in the BIOS. In most cases, all the drives would show up as boot options in the BIOS Boot Menu, but you usually have control over which drives are actually used in the boot order (you may not put your data drive in the boot order, for example).

I am aware about being able to control the booting order, but I swear
that I did not have to do that in the past and the OS drive was found
automatically.

Oh well, I have just turned 60. That means I can apply for a free bus
and London Underground pass, I have just received the National Health
Service bowel cancer screening kit and I suppose I can look forward to
more "senior moments" like this one!

Some systems may detect what's bootable and place it first. Or they might get picked up by port connection order (first booting drive is on SATA port 1, for example). Or the drives are attempted until one boots. I don't generally pay attention to any of that as I usually have to set the boot order anyway (often, multiple times).

Okay, many thanks for that.

It basically works on by switching only the power between drive so in order to work for this you have to enable booting to your SATA drives in the BIOS .
When you boot your pc hardware and network and the drive that is selected by the only drive that has power to work.

Hello,

try unplug all other sata connectors leaving just ur ssd connected to the sata port used by ur original hdd, and check if the sata/storage connection in bios is set to AHCI mode not IDE.

If that doesnt work, load optimised default settings in bios once again and reboot.

give those a try first.
