W7 x64 shortcut weirdness.

Post by TeraByte Support »

Any ideas on this:

Brand new W7 x64 install on new machine. Copied over shortcuts on desktop
from old W7 x32 on different machine. At first the shortcuts worked, then
all of a sudden the shortcuts said target not found, checked properties, and
pointing to C:\Program Files\..., strange since it was working but apps are
in Program Files (x86), so made change and all good for a couple weeks. So
last night after browsing around using mainly firefox (fired up IE at one
point) to find why the RSS feed on the website is coming up raw and getting
ready to shutdown for the night, tried one of the shortcuts (had different
icon) which said target not found, so rebooted, same thing, checked the
target and it's at C:\program files\... again ... two other shortcuts (ones
copied over too - windbg links) were also back at C:\Program Files\...
(could tell by icon) so I changed all three back to C:\program files
(x86)\... and working again. The old machine isn't powered on/connected,
system restore is off, there are no previous versions, no missing shortcuts
added afterwards, etc.. Strange?

TeraByte,

C:\Program Files\ {for 64-bit apps}
C:\Program Files (x86) {for 32-bit legacy apps}

Part of MS + Intel's DEP efforts.

After a useage of a shortcut wrongly linked, DEP via MS might be what
killed your ability to use those 32-bit apps via the linked icons.

Just re-install all 32-bit apps and shouldn't be any more repeats.
That'll get them correctly sorted in the registry.

Fwiw, do you have DEP active in your BIOS? Plus Win7?

DEP I like, DRM not so much.

I could see UAC doing something, but how did the target path get changed
back to "C:\Program Files\..." from "C:\Program Files (x86)\.." ?

The actual executable itself never moved right, just the registry reference
to it correct?

Doubtfull that UAC had much to do with it. Sounds more like DEP a part of
Win7's kernel.

ASk MS on one of their forum's?

Check to see if you have DEP actively 'ON' within Win7...........

Change Data Execution Prevention settings

Click to open System.

Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.

Under Performance, click Settings.

Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.....

yes, DEP is definitely enabled, but doubt it would have to do with that, UAC
virtualization is more in line with (x86) stuff.

The target path being changed in the shortcut is the question. How does a
shortcut target path change? I need to run a check on the RAID mirror,
maybe it pulled old data from mirror not up to date or maybe the firmware in
the SSD pull data from an old area it shouldn’t have.

Well, it wasn't "initialized", so did that and verify so perhaps that had
something to do with it. It should have done all that when I created and
configured the RAID.
