Dell XPS Laptop with Windows 10 and 1T SSD Drive

Post by jack450 »

I've been using IFL 2.74 since that version came out for my Laptop running Windows 7 and my desktop running Windows Vista. I never upgraded to later versions because all they seemed to do was add additional features that I didn't need, and 2.74 worked perfectly for my purposes.

I'm now replacing my laptop with a Dell XPS with Windows 10 and an SSD Drive. Since all I want to do is take an image of the SSD drive and save it to an external drive for later restoration to the SSD drive in case the need arises, can I still use the IFL 2.74 or will I need to upgrade to a later version? If a later version is required, which one is recommended? Any other information I need to be aware of to image an SSD drive running Windows 10?

Thanks,
Jack Greenberg

Jack,

In the Dell XPS firmware the SATA mode is RAID. It needs to be temporarily changed to AHCI for IFL to see your drives. Please let us know how you fare with IFL 2.74.

We have a Dell XPS tablet and laptop. The XPS tablet was interesting in that 64 bit IFL needed to be used in addition to using AHCI.

Ver 3 IFL was being used.

recommend using V3 - http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=611

but at least use 2.99

Thanks Brian. Your advice over the years has always most helpful. I don't actually have the computer yet, but I'm going to order soon. What's the procedure for changing the SATA mode?

I understand your advice, but if I use 2.74 and the image and byte for byte validation complete successfully, can I rely on that image to do a restore?

Jack, this page describes how to change from RAID mode to AHCI.

Of interest. If you create TBwinRE/PE boot media in the XPS laptop you can boot the media in RAID mode and see the drive.

Thanks Brian. I'll have to do some studying since I've never used any of the Terabyte tools. I've used IFL exclusively for several years.

Jack, I don't know if you have used UEFI systems before. You will find the SSD has multiple partitions so for your first backup with IFL, do an Entire Drive backup so you capture all partitions.

Some info on UEFI...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID_Partition_Table

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... 63525.aspx

That last link indicates IFL 2.74 won't boot in a UEFI system. TeraByte Support has indicated you should upgrade to at least 2.99.

Thanks Brian -- That last link is what I needed to know (probably among many other things).

One additional question Brian -- if there is only one drive in the computer, can the SATA mode be left at AHCI, or must it be changed back to RAID when imaging is finished?
