And here it is on eSATA:

If they can't both use the same size for the logical sector (e.g. 512 bytes), I don't think there's a way around it. What I usually do is initialize and format the drive when connected via internal SATA to (hopefully) avoid problems later if I need to connect it internally. In your case, there might also be a difference between internal SATA and eSATA on the enclosure. Otherwise, you may be stuck with having only one interface working at a time.

Paul,

Thanks for hanging in there with me on this.

I am getting to the same conclusion. I think at least one of the 500GB drives I just ordered is not AF, so I'm hoping it will work both ways at least.

I haven't tried formatting when connected to internal SATA yet, but that'll be my last try with the 750GB.

This is connected directly to SATA, just after I formatted it.

Weird thing was when I first connected, BING saw the drive, but nothing on it, not even not allocated. I did Create MBR, and then it showed the unallocated space.

I created an NTFS partition in BING and then added it to the Boot Edit. After booting into Windows, I formatted the drive.

Hi,

I received the two new 500GB drives today:

HGST Travelstar Z7K500 HTS725050A7E630(0J26005) 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145587

and:

SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 ST500LM012(HN-M500MBB) 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822152289

Both are AF drives, according to those pages, and the former also says it supports 512e.

Anyway, I formatted both of them while connected via eSATA and tested both connected by eSATA and USB, and no problems.

So, so far, it's just the initial 750GB drives that I got that seem to be different.
