Incremental Images

Post by DrTeeth »

I notice that the latest update allows the creation of incremental images. I am surprised and puzzled as I recall David from TBU being against them as he felt that they were not reliable. What has changed?

TIA

They can cause problems during DR since if any one in the chain is bad, the
rest after it are no good. However, it's there if you want to use it.

The section that deals with it in the manual is not very clear at all.
The first 'changes only' backup is always a differential backup - in
the manual it is called an 'incremental backup'. It is only subsequent
'changes only' backups that are incrementals, but they have to be
based on the first (differential) changes only backup.

Do you have any data for any speed differences between differential
and incremental backups. If the latter are much quicker, I will have a
tenancy to do more backups before making system changes.

Time savings would depend heavily on the system and how you back up. Space savings could add up more quickly, depending on the amount of changes between backups and the number of differentials normally created before starting a new backup set. For example, if the backup destination is a bottleneck then the space savings would also result in a time savings.

Would it be possible to easily have a way of deciding is a backup file
is an incremental or differential one please?
