1) So why do you say "The file version change has to do with the availability of the /exlist option. Old versions should not restore the new image files WHICH MAY HAVE USED THAT OPTION." ? [my emphasis]

Either the use of that option is what causes the incompatibility with old versions, or there are incompatibilities that have nothing to do with the /exlist option. Did you make a mistake in your original description?

2) Also, please answer jeffw_00's question that this latest version is adding features and is NOT required due to bugs in previous versions that would cause restoration problems. And if he stays with his current version for awhile it will properly backup and restore Image files using that version.

I think the image should contain the version number used to create it and tell which version is acceptable in restoring. Ex. Image created with 2.77 would remind users that version earlier than 2.77 would not be able to restore. I put the version # in the description of the image, but sometimes I forget. I always use the latest versions to avoid problems like this. I assume that latest versions can restore previous images created by earlier versions. Are there any immediate plans for 3.0 version?

1 - the file change is just as I mentioned, anything created with 2.77 will
require 2.77 or later to restore. The change had to do with the /exlist
option.

2 - don't know of any problem restoring existing images and the core changes
would affect that operation, however, it's still recommended that all users
upgrade to the latest version. For those with a valid key/order can
simply download the update.

So getting back to my original question "Why is is recommended to upgrade to 2.77", the only answer I see from TB support is

"Occasionally, based on the scope of what has changed, we will state that it is recommended to upgrade."

Could TB comment on what the scope is, with respect to the 2.77 release, that triggered the recommendation for -this- particular release?

Thanks! 8-}

I'm still curious. I use IFW for vanilla (all defaults) disk-to-disk backups and I'm wondering if there is anything -wrong- with sticking with an older 2.6x version...

IFW is at 279 now. Personally, I would download it and
IFD/IFL 279 now in case I want to install it later.
I did install 278 and haven't downloaded 279 yet since it
was just updated.

Probably not. But TBU does not update for no reason and I will always
update to the latest versions of their software. Unless one has a good
reason for staying with an older version I cannot see any point in
sticking with it.
