Changes backup taking too much data and purge..?

Post by jarany »

I am having an issue with your changes backup. I am executing these things by command line to make the process automated.. The first backup compresses the backup to 21gb. Next day when I run the changes backup, it makes the changes backup to 5gb. When clearly there have not been 5gb of changes to the system since the backup.. So this is a little weird..

Then I am trying to use the purge command to keep a reasonable amount of backups around for a full restore.. I used the following command line. And it asked me if I wanted to delete the full backup file on the end..! This makes no sense when issues a changes backup only.. Here is the command I am using for changes backup:

"C:\Program Files\TeraByte Unlimited\Image for Windows\V2\imagew.exe" /b /base:"X:\Full-Backup" /f:"X:\Backup-w0-chg-$~YYYY$-$~MM$-$~DD$-$~HHMM$" /v /comp:10 /mp /purge:-14

Any help would be appreciated..

If you defrag, that will cause changes.

If it's been more than 14 days it will - otherwise keep it in a separate
folder from the differentials.

Windows automatically does some defagging every 3 days by default.

Actually, I don't think it yet does.. But I know I have defragler setup to run every night for sure..

However I am not doing a sector by sector backup so this logic doesn't make sense.. If files get defragged this shouldn't consider them changed in anyway by the backup tool.. I think I have even run the backup before any defrag went and it did again 5gb just about 4 hours later..

Google "windows prefetch". Every 3 days, by default, when the PC is
idle, it runs a defrag to reorder the files referenced in the prefetch
folder to improve performance - of programs and the boot process (the
last one has been removed in Win 8).

If you wish to do this manually, run "rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,
ProcessIdleTasks" as admin and see the change of the time stamp of
your layout.ini file - which will show the date this was last done by
the system. If the date if the file is very old, the system has failed
and is not working as it should. Only one defragger does not interfere
or ruin this optimisation - PerfectDisk.
