PHYlock failures - related to Windows Update?

Post by timg11 »

I sometimes find that IFW has failed to run, and is stopped with the "Unable to start PHYLock for drive C: You may need to reduce the cache size." message.

When this happens, I have noticed that there are often some Windows Updates requesting to be installed. Is it possible that Windows Update leaves a lot of files open, or somehow interferes with PHYlock?

I have found if I install the updates and reboot, then IFW and PHYlock run without errors.

adjust.

I have read the KB article and increased values. The RAM Cache Size is 10240.

I find the system fails while running a scheduled backup. The displayed error looks like this:
[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/xmBil.png[/IMG]

When I retry, I get this error message:
[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/J2rHB.png[/IMG]

The first failure message says "PHYLock failed to cache all changes. Please increase the cache size in settings."
I re-run and it says "You may need to reduce the cache size."

Huh?

I am able to re-boot and then the backup runs, but this problem happens every few nights during my scheduled backup, so rebooting and re-running is getting tiresome.
This behavior has started recently - in the past few months. I'd rather have a solution than having to roll back to prior versions.

Thanks!

PS - BBCode seems to be stuck in the "off" state, so the images won't display.

Do you have the disk cache (Use Disk Storage, in Settings) turned off?

Use Disk Storage is checked. RAM Cache 10240, Disk cache 2048. Memory slider is one step to the right of center.

Other PHYlock settings: Disable Usage: unchecked, Use If Locking Fails: checked, Use And Release Lock: checked, Volume Flush: checked, Use Disk Storage: checked, Throttle Reads: checked, Throttle Writes: checked.

How do you explain one attempt giving a message to increase cache, and then re-running IFW and getting a message to reduce cache? Under what circumstance would it ever be necessary to reduce cache?

PS how do I turn BBCode on so I can post images?

you should look in the ifw.log file for more details on phylock...

A quick and simple thing to try: reinstall IFW. That's been the fix here when similar messages were seen (rarely) .

Re-installing did not change anything. Backup works once if I manually start it right after a reboot. But a few days later when it runs unattended as a scheduled task, I get phylock failures.

PS - where are the editing controls and BBC code enabling for this forum? It seems to be stuck in "basic" mode and I can't insert image links, code sections, set fonts, bold, etc. Where are the settings configured?

I just noticed 2.77 has been released. I installed it and I will see if it changes anything. A backup is running now, but it always runs once right after a reboot.

PHYLock was using RAM not Disk and it filled up (error 2:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=551)

However, you have limited resource on the system for the amount of RAM
windows will let you allocate. Why are you using RAM mode instead of Disk
Caching? Check your phylock settings and enable the disk cache. If it's
enabled, then there is some reason it can't use the drive, either chkdsk /f
is needed, or limited space on any of the drives being backed up.
