Here is the log when it runs correctly (right after the system is rebooted). Notice the difference is after the "CU" phase.
The successful backup goes to CUC next, then EXIT, followed by "PHYLOCK using Disk".
The failing backup goes from CU to CDDB to CUC then EXIT, and proceeds to "PHYLock Using RAM".

What do CU, CUC and CDDB mean?

Those are all internal - I previously indicated what is happening - still
wonder about the question: if you disable IO Throttling, does your issue go
away?

Re: PHYlock failures - related to Firefox??

Post by timg11 »

I can confirm that the issue is not affected by the IO Throttling setting. I turned it off on both reads and writes, and I still get the failure.

However I have discovered something interesting. It seems that having Firefox (17.0.1) open causes the PhyLock failure.

I was seeing lots of failures with my unattended overnight backup. That is because I normally leave the machine to hibernate with Firefox still running. Previously I rebooted the system after a backup failure, and then ran the backup. It always worked, but I didn't re-open Firefox after the reboot. Today, I saw it had failed the unattended backup, so I simply closed Firefox, and ran it again. PhyLock succeeded, and the backup completed normally.

I know Firefox is a memory hog, but I don't understand why it would keep PHYlock using disk from starting.

how much memory is in your system? Which OS?

Now I am glad I use IE 8 since it is frequently open during
imaging.
