IFD and WHS

Post by Walter B »

Can IFD be used to create an image and restore to an Acer Aspire 340 with
WHS v1 on it? The box is headless, so it would need to be accessed remotely
from one of the clients.

Dynamic drives aren't support so if it's using dynamic drives, then no (it
would only work if the HD's were the exact same size and it would be doing
it sector by sector). Also the hard drive to backup or restore has to
appear local to the machine (the backup file itself can be remote - if you are
booted to DOS with a network drive letter available).

Backing up and restoring a WHS v1 system via imaging is not recommended because of how WHS configures and uses the drives (data loss or corruption can easily occur). That being said, I have done it before on a fairly empty system (to keep the backup small) with several drives. It was an off-line backup of all drives and the restore was an off-line restore of all drives. As far as I know, it's not possible to create backups of the separate drives and have them be valid -- it's all or nothing. In my case, the process worked okay (the WHS had standard monitor/keyboard so access was easy). However, I doubt I'd do it again and I wouldn't even consider using "hot" imaging.
