Copy does not boot

Post by geezlouise14 »

Using IFW to do a full copy of a SATA drive (windows 7, 2 partitions plus the 100m system partition) to a larger SATA drive that I have connected via USB. I did Scale To Fit.
When I attach the copy to the PC I cannot boot. A flashing cursor appears and that's all.

You want to enable the global option/setting that reads "assume same target
system" (because the emulated geometry windows gives USB drives may not be
what your BIOS uses internally and the copy adjusts it for the target), copy
the entire drive (a check next to the drive), use the copy option "update
boot partition" (because your OS and boot partition are in different
partitions and your scaling). Also, if you ever plan on rebooting with both
drives attached or plugging in the USB drive again (with the copy) then also
use the option "Change Disk Signature" otherwise Windows will make the copy
unbootable (not flashing cursor but an error message).

Also make sure the BIOS is set to boot the new drive. Sometimes, when drive connections are changed, the BIOS selects a different drive than expected and booting fails.

Thanks! I had to full around a bit but your tip led me in the right direction. The settings that finally worked were:

global:
- use windows 7 mbr
- assume same target system
- align at 2kib (these are SSD drives)
- align mbr for bios auto mode
- validate geometry before use
Copy options
- omit page file
- omit hibernation
- scale to fit
- change disk signature
- aligned copy

How did your partition alignment finish up? Align at 2kib and Aligned Copy are opposing options.

Not really, aligned copy would align them to 2KiB (or whatever) instead of
putting them at the same (relative) location.

I'm sure you had to enable "update boot partition" as well if your boot
partition was not the actual W7 partition.
