Backing up Windows OS drive?

I'm playing around with Image for Windows and have been trying to get it to backup the current OS drive, or at least the data partition, and have been unable to create a usable image. If byte for byte validation is enabled the job will fail, and when its disabled the image it produces is unable to be mounted. Except for the validation setting I have left everything else at the default.

Is creating a working live backup of the OS drive or it's data partition even possible with Windows running or would I need to run IFW from a boot USB for it to work properly?

Yes, it's definitely possible.

Fail in what way?

Please further explain what you mean by "mounted" and what happens when you do that.
