Image Lockdown

Post by gatortech »

Leo Notenboom commenting on an option to lock down images with Macrium
Reflect:

"The external drive, like the machine itself, is always on and always
connected. Backups happen whether I’m around or not, without my needing
to lift a finger.

I often hear objections to the always-connected state relating to
ransomware: there are variants of ransomware that can encrypt files on
external drives. Not only do I do my best to avoid any and all malware2,
but Reflect has an option called “Macrium Image Guardian” that locks
down the generated backup images such that only Reflect can alter or
delete them — they can’t even be deleted manually in Windows File
Explorer, much less encrypted by ransomware. (I understand other backup
utilities may have similar options.)"

Has that option ever been considered for Terabyte
image software?

The optionally installed component Protectit MIGHT provide something similar. I don't ever install it. All I really know about it is the following from the IFW manual:

ProtectIt: Installs a driver to protect the contents of the TeraByte_TBI_Backups
folders from being modified by other Windows applications. Protection only
applies to running Windows installations and not other Windows installations
without the driver installed.

Gatortech,

"
Version 3.16 - January 12, 2018
Corrected NTFS condition that could cause crash on mount.
Added version check button to settings.
Fixed paths for latest TBIView and TBIMount versions while in simple operations mode.
Ignore excluding Active Directory database if included in FilesToNotBackup.
Added ProtectIt™ component to protect \TERABYTE_TBI_BACKUPS folders from modification from other applications.
Other potential changes, updates and enhancements."
