Creating TBWinRE boot media [Was: Switching to new SSD]

Post by unsmartlady »

I have an SSD that according to S.M.A.R.T. info will fail in the not-too-distant future. I will soon be purchasing a replacement. I have not chosen an exact model yet, but it may be larger than my current one.

The SSD in question contains a BitLocker-protected Windows 10 partition, and the Win10 recovery partition or whatever it is.

Assuming I back up the old SSD ahead of time using IFW, what process should I use to switch to the new SSD when the old one finally dies? Quite honestly even with the docs, all the options baffle me.

unsmartlady,

To summarize, create an Entire Drive image of the SSD with IFW, using VSS.

When the SSD eventually fails, restore the Entire Drive image to a new, blank SSD.

Boot the new OS. BitLocker will be OFF and you will need to re-encrypt.

I can't even create a TBWinRE thumb drive. I get inscrutable error upon error.

What errors are you seeing? What does the log show?

There are a ton of "Access is denied" errors, for example:

mount\Windows\servicing\Packages\Microsoft-OneCore-x86-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.17763.1.mum - Access is denied.

And then:

Error: 0xc1420114
The user attempted to mount to a directory that is not empty. This is not supported.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--[ Mount Error ]---------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The WinRE image couldn't be mounted successfully. Please make sure
no programs (e.g. Explorer) are currently accessing the mount folder
and that the mount folder is empty. Then press a key to attempt
another mount.
Mount folder: C:\Program Files\TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite\tbwinre\mount
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am running the script as administrator.

If you have any security, anti-virus, etc. software installed, have you checked if they're contributing to the problems? Sometimes they'll block access or remove files during the build and cause failures.

Check if the "mount" folder is empty by browsing to it in File Explorer. It should be empty, but if there was a previous failed build then it may not be. The build operation will attempt to clear issues like this, but may not succeed in some cases. It's okay to delete the "mount" folder since it will be recreated when a new build is started.

Make sure you're using current versions of the scripts/programs. None of those details are in what you posted so I can't tell what you're using.

Try using TBWinPE/RE Builder (TBWinPE.exe) instead of the script.

You can also try a build in a normal user folder. For example, create a new folder named TBWinRE in the root C: folder (C:\TBWinRE). Then download the tbwinre.zip file and save it there (http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/downlo ... bwinre.zip). Right-click on the tbwinre.zip file and select Properties from the pop-up menu. If there is an "Unblock" option shown, select it and click OK (this is shown in Step 1 of the tutorial (https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/howto ... torial.htm). At this point, you can now run either the TBWinRE.cmd script or TBWinPE/RE Builder (TBWinPE.exe).

None of those ideas helped. I only use Windows Defender, so hopefully that wouldn't be a problem.

I'm using the latest software. I just installed the latest version before trying your suggestions.

Is it worth trying in Safe Mode? Or would it even work?

Windows Defender shouldn't be an issue. The build won't work in Safe Mode.

You shouldn't be getting any error regarding the "mount" directory not being empty if you tried to create the build in a new folder or if you manually deleted the existing "mount" folder. Were you still seeing the same errors or were they different?

Can you attach or post the log for the TBWinPE/RE Builder attempt and/or the complete output from the script? It may be helpful to see these.

Also, try turning off "Protected Folders" if it's on in Windows Defender.

I've tried many, many times, uninstalled/reinstalled, etc. but never did get this to work. Since I use BitLocker, this means I am without the ability to restore.

I'm getting the same error as before. Turning protected folders off makes no difference, and I'm not getting a warning from that Windows Defender function (i.e. saying that something was blocked).

I updated to Windows 10 1903 just a couple days ago, but that update made no difference either.

I just had the idea to try from the Administrator account, but I've no idea why that would work any differently. (I have not tried this yet.)

Below is the contents of TBWinPE.log from my latest attempt.
