Using a .TBI image in VMWare

Post by blaq »

Hi,
So I've got a .TBI image of a system that was backed up a while ago (that no longer exists), and I was hoping to virtualise it with VMWare (I have Workstation Pro 12). The image was a system running Win XP SP3.

Using the P2V script (Version 2.45), the restore part works fine, but then when it comes to converting, I chose Uniprocessor, it detects the system as XP SP3, then it has and error "Unable to open file 0:\Windows\Driver Cache\driver.cab", and the same for i386.cab, and the script terminates with "Unable to find key \ControlSet001\Services\atapi" and "Error 5: Unable to create service Atapi".
So I add in the i386 directory from a Windows XP SP3 Disk into \Windows\Driver Cache\ and re-ran the P2V script, and now I get the same error as above, but it says "Operation completed partially: File intelide.sys is missing and "Setting HAL file... Error: unable to open file 0:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386\sp3.cab No HAL files available"

Thoughts?

I have always move my drives, physically, from one system to another
when upgrading. The *only* OS that needed something doing to it before
the move was Win XP. One *had* to remove any third party hard drive
interface drivers and reinstall the vanilla MSoft ones or one would
get a BSOD on booting. Maybe something similar is happening with your
VM?

For me, with latest version of tbosdtw, it works fine. Do you have screen shots so I can see clearly what happens?

Hi, this is the error that I'm getting.
Pretty much everything is on default options.

Ok, I got the same error than you for the access to the .cab files, but not for the creation of the service. Maybe your System registry is corrupted?
So for the .cab files this will be corrected.

For the service error, does it depend on the drivers actually being installed? In other words, would that error exist if IDE driver installation had been successful?

For the service error, it happens during the installation of IDE drivers (it's XP, so those drivers are included in the script, and created by it). It should create that service, but it fails. It is not an issue of right (because it could clean...).
@blaq: Can you send the SYSTEM registry?

Not sure what the issue was, but I managed to windows to boot by first using Image4DOS from within the VM to write the image directly onto the VMDK, then used VMWare's vCenter Converter to make the changes.
On a side note, I tried using the [Add Virtual Drive] button when restoring the image, but it gave this error:
