TRIM enhancement request

If I use the "disable TRIM" in the backup options, it would be nice if
IfW would turn it back on again after the backup.

I was surprised to see that it does not seem to do this.

It does turn it back on after the backup. However, if the backup doesn't complete properly (reboot, shutdown, process killed, etc.) then it can be left in the disabled state. Were you seeing the issue with backups that completed successfully?

Yes. The log showed error code 0. I thought it did get turned back on
on a previous version (3.24 or 3.25?) but have noticed this on v3.26.
I could be mistaken about the relevance of the version numbers.

As usual, happy to run any tests for you.

For the first time, I just ran v3.26 with TRIM disabled. I assumed the documentation was accurate and that TRIM would be restored, but now I want to make sure. How do I check to verify this? Like DrTeeth, my backup completed successfully with an error code of 0.

Well, I found the command to check for TRIM:

fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

A result of 0 means TRIM is enabled, a result of 1 means it's disabled.

Unfortunately, the machine I need to check this is currently in use, so I won't be able to check it until later today. Does anyone know if a reboot would automatically re-enable TRIM? After the last backup, the machine has been rebooted once, and shutdown/restarted once, so even if TRIM is enabled now, I'm not sure if that means that IFW turned it back on.

DrT,

Before running an iFW backup (with Disable TRIM) I see...

NTFS DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Disabled)

During the backup...

NTFS DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Enabled)

After the backup...

NTFS DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Disabled)

Hi Brian,

I was misunderstanding how the way IfW re-enabled TRIM. I ran a test
last night with "disable TRIM" set and on booting, trim *IS* enabled.

I did not realise that if a backup were cancelled, TRIM would not be
enabled. I wonder if IfW would re-enable TRIM if TRIM were not enabled
prior to backing up? One would not set "disable TRIM" if it were
intended that TRIM would not be re-enabled. Sorry for all the
double-negatives ;-).
