I have the following displaying in a restore log:

The restore fails trying to expand the partition

Please run a file system check.

Any advice is appreciated.

could be a dirty image if does it on all system or system has bad memory
(run memtest86+) or problem on path to target. Use --vb to validate the
restore (would only validate that it is laid down as backed up).
