First boot after restore

I have just had to do another restore (and no amount of double or
treble clicking works in IfL). I noticed, as usual, that the first
boot after a restore takes much longer than normal. So much so that I
think the restore has not worked in some way.

Why is this? The image was 6 hours old.

I've noticed that too. I've GUESSED that it's because the page file is not being backed up or restored and has to be rebuilt or formatted or something.

Not thought of that one. Good call. I run win 8.1 x64 as my main OS
and I have 16GB memory. The thing is the *whole* boot process seems to
be prolonged and not just one bit. As a habit from the old days, I
used fixed-sized page files. In this (8.1 OS) it is 8192MB.

DrT,

Only a slight difference here. 11 seconds boot time normally, 13 seconds after a restore.

UEFI System, Win10, SSD, System Managed paging file.

No SSDs here. The difference extends to and beyond the login screen,
such that I wished I had worn brown trousers. It is very noticeable.

Your SSD is the key factor here. Not only faster booting, but no
advantage to a fixed, contiguous swapfile.

OT:- I did try an SSD some time ago in a laptop. I it was faulty* and
I decided to get a refund rather than another one. I decided to spend
my money on more memory as I do not do enough things where disk
performance is that much of a factor. My main drive is a hybrid.

*Strange noises were coming from the inside. Probably not significant
but worrisome. It was sort of an electrical-type humming or buzzing.
Difficult to describe.

Did I mention my mate with two fast SSDs? I saw him create a full IFL image of his new Win10 partition in 5 seconds. 7.15 GB image.

He also created an image of his old Win 10 partition in 22 seconds. 32.4 GB image.

A full image of my main drive comes in at 467GB. All file systems are
supported, so no unused sectors there. I backup at the end of a day
and it takes about 1.5 - 2 hrs. SSDs would have to come down a LOT in
price for me to consider them when I can get a 2TB drive for about
£55.

I don't have an SSD. My boot times aren't ever particularly fast. I've not measured them in detail, but in support of the original post, I've had the subjective feeling for a long time (almost certainly going back at least to Windows 7) that the initial boot after a restore takes longer subsequent boots.

Also, a restore disable hibernation (because it is disable inside the backup). So if fast-startup is enable, the first boot takes longer.

Fast boot disabled in every OS.
