IfL enhancement request

Post by DrTeeth »

Hi,

I have a computer that does not have an Ethernet socket nor a CD
drive.

Does IfL have the ability to use the Wi-Fi connection to back up? I
will be next to the router so any weak signal issues will not apply.

I could not find the functionality when I looked for it. I have to
backup a GPT computer before converting it to MBR.

The 32-bit boot disk doesn't include many wifi adapters, as they tend to all
be specific and require lots of firmware code (bloat the boot disk). The
x64 boot disk has many wifi adapters enabled. All the firmware may not be
there, but once booting and not working, and using "createreport" you could
look in there for any errors of missing firmware, makedisk uses the firmware
folder to add to the boot disk as needed (so you'd have to get that
firmware). Also, in general, all network interface configuration is done
from either the Network Configuration item on the running disk, or can be
pre-configured from the Linux make scripts (makeISO, makeHDD, and makePXE)
by selecting the Network Interface Settings menu item while creating a
custom version from Linux.

The TBWinRE/PE boot disk allows adding windows drivers so using wifi may be
better on that platform.

DrT,

I used to do wireless backup/restores from IFL a few years ago. I should still have the method somewhere.

You could also get a USB to Ethernet adapter. They work well.

What about using a USB external HD?

Thanks for that comprehensive answer. One issue is that I could not
get my registration details to be saved on the boot disk using the
same method that I have with the 32-bit IfL for years. Has this issue
been fixed?

That would be handy.

That should do it without any faffing about. I'll get one yesterday
:-).

Everything is connected to my main PC. It has 3 hard drives. One is
dedicated to backups, which are then copied to an attached external
drive.

Thanks for the USB to Ethernet adapter suggestion.

DrT,

This method is for a restore but it's easily adapted to make a backup...

Don't let a 63 character WPA2 password frighten you, as you don't have to type it in. Restores over a wireless network aren't fast but they can be done, if needed.

Create a text file on your IFL UFD and copy the WPA/WPA2 PSK into the text file

Boot the Network IFL UFD

Close the IFL GUI
Click mnt in the dock and mount the UFD
Open "Editor" in the dock. File, Open File, Choose mnt1 (choose "boot" folder if already mounted at boot). (you might need to type / after tbu/mnt1 ) Open the WPA2 text file (leave it on the desktop)

Right click the desktop
Configure Network
Select the Wireless interface (eth1 on my laptop, wlan0 on my desktop)(you will see the interface is DOWN and has no IP Address)
IP Address Mode ... dhcp
Wireless Security ... WPA/WPA2
Wireless SSID ... type it in
WPA/WPA2 PSK ... Highlight the WPA/WPA2 PSK password in "Editor", press Ctrl-C on keyboard. In "Enter the pre-shared key..." field, right click and Paste.
SSID Hidden ... No or Yes
Start eth1 (or whichever interface it is)(you might have to press the Down arrow to see this option) ....
Make sure the interface is UP
Finished/Exit Menu (twice)
Close Editor

Click net1 icon in the dock
Auto Detect SMB Servers (Specify SMB Server Manually if Auto doesn't work)
Select Server
Username
Workgroup (should already be filled in)
Password
Select the Share containing your backup image, click OK
Exit Menu (twice)

Open the IFL GUI
Restore
Normal
File (OS)
open net1
select your .TBI
proceed as per a normal restore

I just did an IFL backup over a Gigabit wired network. 980 Mbps. Nice.

Make sure your adapter is USB3/Gigabit.

Edit.....

Using my adapter, 965 Mbps.

That is exactly what I got. I did not even think of such a thing. Just
a few pounds and easy and fast backups. I did read in the IfL manual
that backups over Wi-Fi are not supported.
