Request to overwrite image during verification?

Post by SuffolkPunch »

I'm using ImageforLinux v3.18 running from a CD and I'm getting a pop-up message, during byte-for-byte verification of a full backup, asking something like "Overwrite full-backup-uefi-newzoom-recovery and win7 partitions-Win7-2018-06-29.tbi?"

I click "Yes", and the verification completes ok, and the restore of that tbi image also completes OK and the PC boots fine.

Checking what's been written during backup to my external USB HD, I see the tbi file (as usual):
full-backup-uefi-newzoom-recovery and win7 partitions-Win7-2018-06-29.tbi (size 41.6GB)

and 2 other files (which I wasn't expecting):

full-backup-uefi-newzoom-recovery and win7 partitions-Win7-2018-06-29.#0 (size 516.1MB)
full-backup-uefi-newzoom-recovery and win7 partitions-Win7-2018-06-29.#_# (size 4.1kB)

Can anyone tell me what's going on here?

Update: Upon reading the IfL manual for v3.18, I see that there is an option called "Create sector hash files" (in the table of options which includes "Validate byte-for-byte"). This option is enabled by default, and it creates 2 files with extensions .#0 (and possibly .#1 .#2 etc) and .#_#. They contain sector hashes (and other stuff?) and are used to speed-up incremental backups.

So - as I only normally create full backups - I will in future untick "Create sector hash files".

Yes, that's the source of the files though I have no idea why you would get a message about overwriting them during validate.

Note also that as of version 3.19 the default has gone back to not creating the hash files.

Good! I'll update my IfL boot disk.
