Hard drive errors

Post by paul-s »

Image for Windows (x64) 2.81
Windows 7 x64

I get this error today when imaging a drive over to an external usb drive -- and I've run it several times, same error. I've run the windows explorer tool to scan and map bad sectors and it reports no problems on either the source or destination drives. This is a new error for me, I have imaged this drive multiple times in the past with no errors. All my other drives are imaging okay. If I select to continue, Image for Windows seems to stall out, and my whole system seems bogged down.

Error:
---------------------------
Warning - Image for Windows
---------------------------
A hard drive error occurred while reading 127 sectors from LBA 57146888.
Ignore all errors and continue?
---------------------------
Yes No

Windows would log the disk error in the event viewer. The drive
manufactures scan utility (or something like spinrite) is what you'd want to
check the drive with (may silently remap the bad sectors as well).

The drive can take a long time to respond on each bad sector attempting to
be read, so all you can do is wait, the times will jump up to insane numbers
because it's not moving forward at all (zero progress) while waiting for the
response.

Yes errors are in the system event log.
The drive is Samsung HD501LJ.
After searching, the drive utility support from the manufacturer is a mess. It appears that the dos version of seatools (seagate) is what you are supposed to use now since it might repair or what I'm not sure. All I need is a backup of the drive then I'll replace it. Do you know anything about this?

just do your backup and let it sit there until it finishes, hopefully only a
few bad sectors or it can take days.

Okay that worked, and it took 2 hours for full backup.
And 9 bad sectors encountered.
