Restoring Images using TBWinRE and IFD

Post by TomByrnes »

I have 2 probably silly questions. I have created a TBWinRE UFD on a system upgraded to Windows 10 (so regular bios).
Using this on a Windows 7 system to run through the motions of doing a complete disk restore, it appears to find everything OK.
Q1: Will it successfully restore a Win 7 MBR drive (and leave it as MBR?)
Q2: On a Windows 10 UEFI system, could I boot to IFD (in Legacy and non-secure boot mode) and restore an image of a Win 10 GPT drive?

Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Q1: Yes. The drive type wouldn't change unless you restored a different type image or manually converted it. In your case, I assume you would be restoring an entire (or partial) image of the Win 7 MBR drive.

Q2: Yes, assuming the BIOS will properly boot the IFD boot media. It's recommended to boot the media you would be using to restore so you know it works on the system (sometimes different settings are required, for example). You can check all required drives are seen correctly, the backup image validates successfully, etc.

Not sure of the question, but if you did an entire drive backup of a win7
mbr drive then when you restore, it would go back that way.

Yes, provided the BIOS environment can properly access the entire drive
(some may not). Otherwise you'd use IFL or TBWinRE/PE.

Thanks, Paul. Yes I have tested as far as I can (i.e. I can see the FROM and TO drives correctly.) I am getting the Win 10 PC tomorrow so cannot test the UEFI complication just yet, but wanted to have all my ducks in a row beforehand.

I assume you are aware that the TBWinRE and IFL boot media can boot in UEFI mode.

yes I am aware of that. Posed IFD question as fallback, in case of emergency/all else fails. I'm comfortable using IFD and it is the simplest to setup.
