Win 7 Copying Files and Folders and Imaging

To make space on one of the HDs on a Windows 7 system, I am deleting a current partition. However, before doing this, a want to save the current files in the partition "just in case". The used space on the partition is about 40GB and I initially thought that I would just copy all of the folders and files to an external USB drive. However, when I went to do this through File Manager, either by dragging the folders/files to the external drive or highlighting them and then copying and pasting, only 2.69GB was copied. The copy process completed; it didn't fail. So I am wondering why all 40GB wasn't copied. Maybe this was a result of Windows 7 Access Control.

Given that copying the files didn't seem to work, I decided to use IFW (ver 2.61 installed ... I trust that this is OK for WIn7) to create an image of the partition. This is in progress and seems to be working fine. As IFW is working in the Windows environment, it made me wonder how it manages to ignore the Windows file structure and any controls that might be in place. I am guessing that IFW bypasses the normal Windows read/write process to gain access to the image on the HD.

Can someone clarify the issues that I have raised here.

Thank you
Gordon M

it directly accesses the drive, it's not file based.

not sure on your copy issue, maybe run as admin would copy more or use
command line tools like robocopy or xcopy without ignoring errors to see if
it gives any indication on your windows explorer issue.

Thanks for the reply, TBU. I haven't found the reason why the files aren't all copied by WIndows File Manager, but I imaged the drive instead, using IFW. I am not bothering to follow this up further at the moment.

Thank you
