IFW and WIN10 1709

I have a WIN10 Home 1703 fully updated desktop configuration with IFW/IFL 3.12. The system disk consists of three small partitions (Recovery, System, Reserved) and the Primary (C:).

When I take a full backup of the system disk IFW uses VSS - and IFW successfully completes the backup and validation.

I “updated” WIN10 to the 1709. IFW will not take a full system disk backup without “Byte-for-byte comparison failed”.

More information:

I restored a WIN10 1703 backup, and again updated Win10 to 1709 and IFW to 3.12 to be sure the updates ran properly.

IFW under WIN10 1709 uses PHYlock - not VSS. Why?

I have run multiple memory tests using the latest memtest86 - with no errors indicated.

The same full disk backup and byte-for-bye validation works without a problem using IFL.

Any suggestions as to what is happening with IFW 3.12 under WIN10 1709?

Is VSS failing and IFW reverts to PHYLock or is VSS use not enabled?

If I go into Settings, VSS is enabled.

If I check PHYLock "Disable Usage" I get a dialog that says "Unable to obtain a lock on drive C:" "Please ensure that PHYLock was enabled and has not been disabled."

OK – this is really getting to annoy me. Did more testing. To my surprise the partition that is causing the issue is not C:, but the EFI system partition Partition (02) 100 MiB FAT-32. IFW log file is:

If I take a full disk backup, but omit the 100 MiB FAT-32 file the backup uses VSS and the validation completes successfully.

Does the Windows Event Viewer have any helpful info on the VSS failure?

The validation most likely fails due to changes being made outside of the snapshot/lock by Windows or because of the drive not supporting DRAT.

If the failure was due to DRAT wouldn't it have also failed under WIN10 1703?

And there is not a validation failure when the 100MB partition is left out of a backup and VSS is used. Just asking.

bob66412,

I use PHYLock but I switched to VSS for this test. IFW 3.12. Win10 1709 installed on a GPT disk as you have. Entire Drive image and /vb. No errors in the IFW log and my SSD doesn't support DRAT.

For what it's worth....

I also have several drives that don't say they support DRAT that haven't even had any issues with it.

Can you verify the VSS options in Settings (PHYLock/VSS tab)? Are any of them different from the defaults?

Specifically, are the "Lock Unsupported Volumes", "Ignore Unsupported Volumes", and "Handle EFI System Partition" options enabled?

I compared my Settings against those shown in the IFW User Manual and they agree with the values shown.

Except for "Use VSS when available", which is checked.

Specifically, are the "Lock Unsupported Volumes", "Ignore Unsupported Volumes", and "Handle EFI System Partition" options enabled?

Yes, they are.

Are you sure "Handle EFI System Partition" is enabled?

Does it show GPT next to the drive listed or MBR or EMBR ?
