Copy 7 Drive to larger Drive, No Boot

Post by chris »

Using IFD 2.66 (with defaults, & use 7 MBR, ATAPI DMA (PATA), BIOS(DIRECT), Verify byte-for-byte) I copied a 120G SATA drive (containing 7 Ultimate as SRP, 35G C:, balance of space on D:) to a 250G SATA drive (which has an existing Windows install, and is now to have SRP, 35G C:, balance of space on D:). The copy completed OK.

Booting off the new drive (old drive disconnected) I first got "BOOTMGR is missing". After 3x Windows Startup Repairs, each attempted boot goes to "Windows failed to start...Launch Startup Repair (recommended)", which i select, & then "checking disk for errors"(about a minute) & then "attempting repairs" which runs for several mins. Finally, next reboot says "Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically".

chkdsk of the C: from Hirens Boot CD shows zero bad sectors.

Do I have IFW set correctly?

Chris,

Does the new HD have two OS? Are you using BIBM as the boot manager?

OK. Is the new OS set Active?
Was there a SRP on the old HD?

You should do an "entire drive" copy with scale to fit and update boot
sector option enabled. or copy the boot partition first, with set active
and copy first track, then the OS partition with a new size to fill the
drive and update boot sector option enabled.

BOOTMGR missing would be more like you copied just the partition and it
wasn't the boot partition. You need to ensure you copy both the boot and os
partition and when the os and boot partition are separated the update boot
sector option is needed.

T.Support, thanks. This job has really gone down the tubes. ("learning experience") I also now cant boot the original disk/OS installation. "bootmgr missing".
And when I supposedly restore its SRP & C from its backup, its the same result.
My saved backups for this PC show only Drive (Partial) & "C" Partition (01) 36000MiB no sign of the 100M SRP (i dont do the D: data partition on the same drive). The saved backup file titles show just w0-0x1 and not w0-0x1-0x2
How was i missing backing up the critical SRP? What do i have to do to include it, I thought I had?

btw, Brian, I didnt set Active when copying as the manual says "Note: Unless you copy an entire drive, Image for DOS does not automatically set the copy as the active boot partition unless you select the Set Active option. " and i Did copy an entire drive.

I understand 7 Ultimate by default has an SRP. With the copy, how am i missing the SRP when I selected to copy the full disk of this 7 Ultimate installation?

(btw I dont want to remove the SRP on my machines, I want to handle windows backup\restore\copy with the partitions as they are. And I only ever want to do SRP & C)

What is the fastest way on a non-bootable system of checking partitions and what is active?
If i boot off the 7 install DVD, diskpart "list partition" shows only 2 partitions on the new hard disk ie C & D. No sign of the SRP.
Is it hidden?
Would "list volume" have shown it?
Either Ive somehow (how?) missed copying it, or it (7 Ultimate) didnt have one, and now that its not bootable i cant use Windows Disk Manager to check if it did.

When i make the C active (with diskpart) it has an * against it, before it didnt have one. This must be how diskpart indicates what is active?
Of course the SRP (the bootable partition) is what should be active, for 7 Ultimate, not C. Im just not seeing an SRP.

Fortunately? or unfortunately? I dont use IFW IFD IFL often enough to be totally familiar with all the options & how-tos, and clarity is lost in the sheer volume of manuals, forum postings, and my notes.

And the biggest question now is: >> how can i recover the original 7 Ultimate install with a C backup but no SRP backup, & the boot error "BOOTMGR is missing"? given that startup repair failed to deal with the same error on the new (copied to) SATA drive.
Edit: Update: on the original HD, 1. diskpart says C: is Active & 2. Ive rebuild BCD by bootrec /rebuildbcd & it boots in Safe mode, only. Bedtime 3:30am

Thanks!

Chris,

Can you look in Disk Management of the old HD? How many partitions are present? Which is the Active partition?

bootmgr missing means the partition trying to boot having a Win Vista/7
style boot sector doesn't contain the bootmbr file, meaning it's not the
boot partition (or maybe the file system can't be accessed). So from Win7
recovery you can go to a command prompt and run chkdsk on the various
partitions, or follow KB article:

Brian, T.Support,

"I understand 7 Ultimate by default has an SRP."-me. I learn daily. The original 7 Ultimate HD does Not have an SRP. (just an Active C, and the D for my Data). So that answers a bunch of my queries.

dispart also clearly shows what is Active if one goes select partition x then detail partition

My original HD only booting - & the newly copied one, I later discovered - in Safe Mode, was i think related to monitor refresh rates. (puzzling. use another monitor, it boots fine, hallelujah, & its 1280x1024 60hz; back to the original monitor and it Now also Works, still same 1280x1024 60. Both original & copied HDs did this.odd).

7 after the disk changes, thinks its not genuine Windows.

bootrec /rebuildbcd fixes the "Bootmgr is missing" error.

I still dont know why i got that error.
T.Supports' suggested:
"You should do an "entire drive" copy with scale to fit and update bootsector option enabled.."
- I dont want scale-to-fit as i want to retain C at 35GB. Its easy to expand D later from within 7 to fill the drive.
"..or copy the boot partition first, with set active and copy first track, then the OS partition with a new size to fill the drive and update boot sector option enabled."
- I dont have a boot partition (my big surprise).
- "Update Boot Sector" (means "Update Boot Partition"?) is for "where the boot partition differs from the system partition"-IFL Manual.

This leaves me with my original settings, which give the "Bootmgr is missing error" and everything that followed. I do still do want to be able to make bootable multi-partition drive copies (typically to a larger HD).
Is there any other setting I could change???? so it boots

Thanks !

Chris,

Can you try this?
Delete the partitions on the new HD
Do an entire Drive Copy
Leave the Options alone. No extra ticks (leave the defaults)
When completed, remove the old HD and put the new HD in the boot position
Start computer

It works for me.
