after running memtest86 on your system at least one pass, run chkdsk /f on
all your drives. Mount drives not mounted to chkdsk /f them.

I tried turning VSS on by checking the "Use VSS When Available" box in

after doing the below, you could also try launch ifw with the command line
option /mtcomp:0 /mtvb:0 /mtdecomp:0

(either edit the shortcut temporarily or open admin command prompt and run
"c:\program files (x86)\terabyte drive image backup and restore
suite\imagew64" /mtcomp:0 /mtvb:0 /mtdecomp:0 /logl:9

My wife's laptop, running Windows 10 Home on its SSD, also has IFW 2.99, and can back itself up to an external USB drive without failing Byte-for-Byte validation. I noticed that its Settings were almost the same except that under PHYLock/VSS, "Lock Unsupported Volumes" and "Ingore Unsupported Volumes" were checked while those were unchecked on my PC; so I checked those options on my PC, tried backing up to my internal HDD, but the validation failed again. I then tried backing up to the external USB drive instead but validation failed on that too.

I ran Passmark Memtest86 V7.1 for one pass and it found no errors. Also, running 7 instances of HCI MemTest at 2047 MB each (the PC has 16GB of RAM) for an extended period of time found no errors.

I ran chkdsk /f on all drives, no errors or problems found on any of them.

I am not able to use the /mtcomp, /mtvb, or /mtdecomp options with IFW because they were introduced with version 3.00 and I am using 2.99. I hope you can understand that I'm not sure I want to pay for the upgrade if I'm not sure it will fix my problem.

have you followed all the items in
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=151 (chkdsk /f, validate
and fix raid, no overclocking, ensure memory clocks correct, check driver
stack, etc..)? You can enable /logl:9 to see the data.

If so, make your system 8G system (look at pc manual for the memory
configurations), if fails, swap out the two for the other two (if fails, you
could try mixing since I've come across multi bad DIMMs). If you have two
4G DIMMs that work for the system, just use the new ones.

You can also boot TBWinRE or use IFL boot media to ensure no driver
modifying things.

It's also been known that sometimes the L2 cache can be bad and replacing
the CPU fixes it.

Re: Validate Byte-for-Byte fails under Win10 but not Win7

Post by TeraByte Support »

have you followed all the items in
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=151 (chkdsk /f, validate
and fix raid)? If you're using RAID (particularly mirroring), you need to
validate and fix using the RAID software.

I did chkdsk /f already (see above). The 16GB of RAM is two 8GB sticks of G.SKILL Ripjaws V DDR4 2800 (PC4 22400) F4-2800C16D-16GVG, rated for 16-16-16-36 and that is what the XMP profile is using.

There is no RAID, though the way you suggested that I had one prompted me to remove the Intel RSTe driver in case that was causing the issue. But validation still failed after removing it.

I have removed a minor overclock from the CPU, which is an Intel i7-6700K. Validation still failed.

In case I have not explained clearly enough, I'll do it again in a different way: my PC has two SSDs, and I can choose which one to boot up on.
SSD #1 (240GB Intel 330): Windows 7 x64 with IFW 2.99 installed. When PC is booted up on SSD #1, IFW can back up SSD #1 and SSD #2 and Validate Byte-for-Byte passes for both SSDs.
SSD #2 (512GB Samsung 850 Pro): Windows 10 x64 with IFW 2.99 installed (now 3.02 trial). When PC is booted up on SSD #2, IFW can still back up SSD #1 and Validate Byte-for-Byte passes, but when attempting to back up SSD #2, Validate Byte-for-Byte fails.

Then it sounds more like you want to check the drivers stack on the disk
drive because something is modifying the sectors beyond where vss and
phylock are located or using special calls to tell the driver on the disk
stack to modify the drive that the file system didn't ask it to (vss doesn't
know about) and not something phylock would know about. You can use
something like device tree to look at the drive stack rather than just
looking at upper and lower filters.

When you say "use device tree", what do you mean? I did find DeviceTree V2.30 at osronline.com but it seems like I have to create an account there to download it and it doesn't mention OS support after Win7/Server2008R2. Just wanted to be sure what you meant before I did that.

If it helps, in the regkey
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
in LowerFilters there is only EhStorClass and in UpperFilters there is only phylock and partmgr.
