If ransomeware strikes, can an IFW image be restored to overcome it?

They may have gotten to your other drives or partitions.
Do so carefully and make sure your image is write protected.

I create an image almost every day, full on Sunday, incremental other days. These images reside on a partition dedicated to that purpose on my only hard disk. Not the greatest place, I know, but each week I copy the full backup to DVDs with BingBurn. I'm reasonably confident that in the worst case I could recover to my state a week ago (and probably recover some or all files updated since then from an online backup service).
