validation fails

Post by TomS »

I am evaluating Image for Windows to determine whether or not to purchase, and it's not going well so far. I making an image of a 64 GB drive (but only 37 GB used) onto an external drive (via USB 2.0) with a total capacity of 60 GB.

I have tried 3 times so far. Each time, the copy appears to work, but the validation (both regular and byte-for-byte) fail. According to FAQ, one possibility is overclocking. I have a laptop with Intel Turbo Boost, but I don't seem to have anyway to disable that (even in the BIOS).

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, Brian. Yes, #152 is the article I found earlier. I have tested my RAM using both MemTest86 and the Windows Memory Diagnostic. I ran several tests with both tools and found no errors. I have a 1-month-old Asus G74SX laptop with 16 GB RAM. I love the machine and haven't had any problems except this.

After my original post, I tried doing a backup without the validation option, and it worked. I then used TBIView to read the backup file and had no trouble.

Even though it appears as if perhaps the backup did work, I would prefer to be able to validate.

Tom, I agree not being able to validate is concerning. Do you have another external HD you can try? Or create an image over the network to another computer? It would be interesting to see whether these images validated.

There is a kb article that covers the various causes, for USB the most
common would still be bad memory, bad port/cable (especially the ones on the
front of the case), also if it's the "byte-for-byte" failure, not image
stream corrupt, that could be related to using ssd with trim support enabled
in Windows, or you need to run chkdsk/f.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't had time to try another external HD yet, but I will try that next week. It's a new laptop, so I don't think it's a port issue. I could try another cable I suppose. I'll let you know if I get something working. I'll also investigate whether or not I can turn off Turbo Boost since that might affect it negatively the way overclocking apparently does.

I just tried doing a full drive backup to another partition on the same drive, and it passed byte-for-byte validation. :)

Do you think it's safe to do this each time?

1) Backup to internal drive with byte-to-byte validation.
2) Copy backup file to external drive.

It's safe to do it, but it won't mean much if the backup is corrupted when copied. Test if you can successfully validate the backup after copying it to the external drive. If not, something is corrupting the transfer.

I seriously doubt Turbo Boost would be a cause of corrupted/invalid images.
