Got it done eventually, not sure what I was doing wrong but reinstalled IfW on Surface, ran setup then ran IfW and it worked ... used TBIView and it seems to have worked ok.

Thanks.

Yep, the backup seems ok, but of course that is from running IfW from the C drive - I can't yet get it to boot from a makedisk.

If you run TBWinPE/RE Builder and create the TBWinRE boot media will it boot from that? There is a shortcut in the Start menu (IFW-Create Recovery Boot Disk). Or you can open Explorer and browse to the folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Terabyte Unlimited\Image for Windows\V2\tbwinre) and run TBWinPE.exe. Another way, if running IFW in Simple Operations mode, is to start IFW and then click the button on the first screen.

Do you know if BitLocker is being used on the drive?

I have two Create Recovery Boot Disk, one goes to makedisk for Linux (which won't run) and the to DOS. That is what I have been doing.

I do not have a tbwinre folder. Do I nned to upgrade?

No, how do I find that out?

My Surface Pro 4 will not boot successfully from the IFU USB 3 pen drive I built using makedisk.exe (included in ifu_en version 2.99.) This pendrive was built on the Surface Pro 4. Attempting to boot gets to a screen with a few white pixels blinking, in the top left hand of the display. Turning off secure boot (and TPM) makes no apparent difference.
Today I created a TBWINRE boot disc on a USB 3 stick. That booted the Surface Pro 4 successfully, and IFW ran and validated (byte for byte) successfully. Interestingly, while the date and time auto inserted in the filename is correct (2016-07-2-1829) File explorer shows the time created/modified as 21-Jul-2016 12:20. This dating anomaly is not confined to the SP4, it is also present on the files created by IFD on my desktop machine. My time zone is +9.5 hours.
The TBWINRE boot pendrive does not appear in File Explorer or Directory Opus, but is shown in Disk Management on the SP4. It appears in File Explorer and Directory Opus if I plug it into the desktop.
I had previously run IFW from a shortcut on the SP4 desktop, but validation failed, whether I used VSS or Phylock. Because I was unable to boot from the IFU stick, I started looking at other imaging programs. Others also failed to boot the SP4 from its boot stick, but booted my desktop OK. The desktop has a hybrid BIOS

you can only boot MS OS on there unless you enable other certificates for
secure boot.

Most will use IFL or TBWinRE/PE on the surface, not IFU.
