Slow backup start up on Winidows 10

I have a Windows 7 and a Windows 10 partition on the same PC.
When using IFW running in Windows 7 to image Windows 7 (the running system), the image writing starts promptly.
When using IFW running in Windows 10 to image Windows 10 (the running system), the image writing seems to ALWAYS be delayed 10 minutes (the PhyLock maximum wait time).
Any similar observations or any idea why this would be?

something is writing to the drive, reduce the wait time, or switch to use
VSS.

I did notice that Win 8/8/1 did much more disk writing when idle than
Win 7. As Win 10 is an evolution of 8/8.1 that may be the case here.

Bob,
You can use Procmon.exe (Sysinternals) to see what is writing to the drive.
By the way, I have Win10 on several computers and don't have an issue with IFW.

Related question: Is the image any less reliable/consistent when it starts because the wait time expired, presumably while something is still writing to the disk?

I have found that sometimes if I stop a slow start and rerun that it
will then proceed more closely to normal.

Yes, me to. It sometimes feels like if it doesn't start immediately, it's very unlikely to start until the wait time has expired.
It seems I spoke too soon regarding ALWAYS. I was ready to change that to "frequently" and it may even be "sometimes" or "occasionally". I have to monitor and experiment some more.

I can 'third' this one. If it has not started in a minute or less, I
cancel that backup and start again.

It now appears to me that this also was probably an overreaction. After the above discussion, I changed the wait time to 1440 (24 hours). Far more often than not, the image writing now starts right up quickly. When it occasionally doesn't, I grit my teeth and wait. So far, I've never had to wait 24 hours!
