Quick help needed - MS Office Update sees wrong Volume

Please help quickly. I have to repair the PC of a friend of mine, who wants to get it back asap. The problem is that MS Office 2003 SP3 installer reports "Error 1327. Invalid volume: G:\". I fail to see such a volume G:\ in the WinXP Home Disk Management. Perhaps WinXP Disk Management is puzzled by the EMBR, which it sees as a FAT volume whereas in fact it is 223/DFh.

How can I establish what it is that WinXP sees as Volume G:\ and what can I do to let WinXP see the partitions the way it wants to in order to successfully install the Office Udate?

I have attached BING screenshots of HD-0, HD-1, EMBRM properties and a WinXP screenshot of its Disk Management.

Maybe you have something already installed in Office that was pointing to G:
which no longer exists.

I've run into Office installer problems before when the original CD/DVD drive wasn't available.

Do you imply that my partitioning should look OK for Windows?

But if so, should I then not be able to repair the existing Office installation? But there is no difference whether I install the update online, or offline from the downloaded package, or whether I try to change (repair) the existing installation. I always get the same message "Error 1327. Invalid volume: G:\".

So what could I do now to succesfully install the Office update?

It looks like you have every real partition loaded. Does your friend know if there used to be a G: partition and where it was?

These might help (a Google search shows quite a few):

I think there has never been a G: partition but only C: and E: (D: being the DVD drive). It was me who installed BING on his computer and built in one of my old IDE HDDs as HD-1. I am not quite sure whether I deleted everything completely. As far as I remember I did so using the Clear Boot Sector option.

Thank you for the links. I will still have to check them.

Thank you again for the links Paul. They are quite relevant and helped me a lot. Although I have not yet been able to solve my problem I am now on the right track. It appears to be no BING problem but rather a Windows problem. I consider this thread as having achieved its purpose.

The easiest way to fix these things is to do a registry search for the
drive that never was and change any references to it to that of the
current CD drive.

I solved the problem in the meantime. I must admit that did not search the registry for the non-existing drive G but I directly went to the registry key that was indicated as relevant to the problem in the Microsoft answers forum and found the value "G" there. I changed that to "E" where the MSOCache directory (250 MB) resides and again tried to install MS Office SP3 update but again failed.

Later on I hit upon the MS Local Installation Source Tool, which can enable or disable LIS (Local Installation Source, which is the MSOCache folder) or move it to a new volume. I chose to move it to volume C (the registry entry mentioned still pointing to E as amended by me). After that I was able to install the Office 2003 SP3 Update. The funny thing was that the LISTOOL obviously could handle the non-existing Volume G (in spite of my changing the RegValue mentioned to "E") as I could see in the tool's logfile. The second but last line of that protocol read: "Deleted Files from G:\MSOCache\", the last line being "Moving succeeded."
