Industry changes & future updates. What OSs are you using?

Post by TeraByte Support »

Due to the inability to acquire SHA1 based code signing certificates in the future, starting December 2023 any updates of our Windows software will no longer run out of the box on Windows 2000 through Windows 7 (who have not applied the SHA-2 hot patch). The companies that provide such certificates are saying:

"Unfortunately SHA1 code signing certificates are being deprecated as of December 1st 2020 per Microsoft requirements. It will no longer be possible to request these. "

"we are unfortunately unable to offer you a SHA1 Code Signing Certificate. These are the new industry regulations that have been put in place which stipulate that SHA1 Code Signing Certificates are to be discontinued by December 1st at the latest."

Newer Windows versions ignore SHA1 based code signing certificates and only honor SHA-256 based certificates so discontinuing SHA1 versions makes no real since but that's the way things stand today. We may offer our own SHA1 root certificate that users would have to install depending on the state of things in the future.

Please take part in the poll to indicate which OSs you're still using.

Update: There is some additional on how to add SHA-256 support to older OSes at https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/ ... -p/1128617

Just spent 5 mins chasing my tail trying to find it. The only places I
need to login are the downloads and web forums. I'll give up until a
link is posted. Life is too short.

'Cos I am not using my browser to access these forums. I am using a
news reader, viz Agent. Eventually found it.

Just to be a scutch (as my grandmother used to say...<grin>)

I noticed that the poll only cares about windows. What not add a linux/bsd option just for grins?

"...starting December 2023..." ?
Are you giving users 3 years advance notice, or is the above a typo?

It's going to be December 2022 because even though the order was 11/30/2020 the activation wasn't going to be until 12/2/2020 and they wouldn't activate it.
